Berge, Donnelly win titles at Flanagan Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa — South Dakota State wrestlers Bennett Berge and Cody Donnelly each claimed individual titles Saturday during competition at the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open hosted by Loras College.

Berge, a freshman from Mantorville, Minnesota, breezed through the 184-pound bracket, winning all three of his matches by fall. After pinning Alex Lozano of Loras in his first match, Berge notched a first-period fall against Iowa’s Aidan McCain in semifinal action. The championship bout pitted Berge against Grand View’s Tyson Beauperthuy, with the Jackrabbit wrestler taking the title with a fall in 4 minutes and 3 seconds.

Donnelly, a redshirt freshman from Philip, was victorious in the 197-pound class in equally impressive fashion. He recorded a 20-3 technical fall over Central College’s Brodie Toth in the opening round, then won by fall against Nathan Rosas of Central in the semis (5:35) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Beau Yineman in the title tilt (1:30).

Also advancing to the finals was freshman 141-pounder Caleb Thoennes. He outscored his first two opponents by a 31-13 margin before dropping a 5-2 decision to Mikey Kaminski of Northern Illinois in the championship match.

SDSU freshman heavyweight Kail Wynia also competed in Saturday’s tournament but did not place after compiling a 2-2 record.
