Saint John’s wrestling hosts its annual North Country Open at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in Sexton Arena.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Ten Johnnies wrestled at Elmhurst’s large Al Hanke Invitational last Saturday (Jan. 14) in Illinois. The tournament consisted of 18 teams and 258 wrestlers. Six of the 10 Johnnies won a match on the day. Sophomore Logan Thorsten (157; Foley, Minn.), sophomore Noah Whitfield-Lopez (165; Wheatland, Wyo.) and junior Ben Gilbertson (184; Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) all won their first bouts, but fell in round two.
WHO WILL BE THERE: The Johnnies are scheduled to be joined by Concordia-Moorhead, Division I Iowa State, Itasca C.C., Division II Mary (N.D.), Division II MSU-Moorhead, Division I North Dakota State, Ridgewater and Division II St. Cloud State.

LAST YEAR’S TOURNEY: SJU hosted last year’s North Country Open on Jan. 23 (2022) in Collegeville. The tournament consisted of 183 wrestlers, across all divisions of collegiate wrestling, on six mats.
Sophomore D.J. Myles (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) led eight Johnnies in the silver bracket by taking the title at 197 pounds with a 3-0 record. He started the day with a 7-5 decision and won the semifinal with a first-period pin. Myles pinned classmate Tommy Gilmore 30 seconds into the second period for the first-place finish and improve his record to 9-7 this season. Gilmore received a first-round bye and earned his first collegiate win via fall in the semifinal.
