WORTHINGTON, Minn. — Caleb Thoennes and Roman Rogotzke each claimed individual titles Saturday to lead a small contingent of South Dakota State wrestlers at the Worthington Open.
Thoennes, a freshman from St. Cloud, Minnesota, posted a 3-0 record en route to the 141-pound championship. He posted a 10-5 decision over Matthew Lewis of Indian Hills Community College in the opening round before notching a 5-3 decision against Vince Citramo. In the championship match, Thoennes scored a 17-5 major decision against Brock Bolling of Morningside.
A redshirt freshman from Stillwater, Minnesota, Rogotzke also went 3-0 on the day with a pair of pins in the 184-pound weight class. He opened with a first-period fall against Joseph Gray of Morningside, followed by a 15-4 major decision over Ryan Hirschkorn of Northern State. In semifinal action, Rogotzke recorded a fall against Cyncere Haskins of Northland Community and Technical College 24 seconds into the second period.
Rogotzke was scheduled to face Cade Linn of Indian Hills in the championship bout, but Linn withdrew from the tournament due to injury to give Rogotzke the title.
Also reaching the championship round was freshman heavyweight Kail Wynia. After pinning Brenick Hoppe of Morningside in the first round, Wynia advanced to the title bout with decisions over Joshua Gaye of Indian Hills (4-0) and Jakob Jerabek of Morningside (3-2). Harley Andrews, wrestling unattached, ended Wynia’s title hopes with a fall late in the first period.
Other Jackrabbits to compete Saturday at the Worthington Open were freshmen Ryan Dolezal and Brock Fettig. Dolezal placed sixth at 165 pounds, while Fettig finished third in the 174-pound division. Fettig outscored his opponents by a 53-22 margin en route to a 3-1 record, winning two matches by technical fall and one by major decision.
