Auggies drop Battle of the Burgs bout to Knights

WAVERLY, Iowa — Wartburg University claimed wins in six of 10 bouts, with four wins by major decision, to claim victory in the annual “Battle of the Burgs” dual meet with Augsburg University, a 22-14 decision on Thursday evening.

Augsburg, the No. 6-ranked team in the latest NWCA Division III tournament rankings and No. 1 in the dual-meet rankings, opened the dual meet with a victory, but Wartburg won five of the next six bouts to take a lead it would not relinquish. Wartburg is ranked No. 1 in the NWCA tournament rankings and No. 3 in the dual-meet rankings.

No. 4-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) scored one of the biggest wins of the night, using a 1:01 riding-time advantage to claim a 2-1 win over Wartburg’s No. 1-ranked David Hollingsworth, Shilson’s first win over Hollingsworth in three career meetings. Both wrestlers scored on escapes, but Shilson used a strong leg ride in the third period to build just enough riding time to claim the win, improving to 21-3 on the season.

Derek Steele (SO, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) opened the dual meet with an impressive 6-4 win over Wartburg’s No. 5-ranked 125-pounder, James Levy. Steele improved to 14-7 overall, building a 5-1 lead after two periods on two takedowns and a stalling point.

Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), ranked No. 6 at 285 pounds, improved to 28-1 on the season with his 97th collegiate career victory, an 8-0 major decision win over Eli Pannell. Kim scored takedowns in each period and built 1:48 riding time to claim his 18th bonus-point win on the year (14 pins, one technical fall, three major decisions).
