Auggies win 6 of 7 in dual over Pointers
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The No. 4-ranked Augsburg University women’s wrestling closed its regular season in dominant fashion, winning six of seven bouts with four pins, in a 28-19 dual-meet victory at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Thursday evening.
Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in both the latest NWCA women’s NCAA tournament and dual-meet rankings, surrendered the first three bouts by forfeit, but won six of the final seven bouts, scoring four pins, a technical fall and a decision.
Top-ranked 136-pounder Nina Makem (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) claimed her 50th career victory on Thursday, scoring her fourth career win over UW-Stevens Point’s Addison Young. Makem converted a takedown and a four-point throw into a 1:20 pin, improving to 21-3 on the season with her seventh pin. She now has 19 bonus-point wins (12 technical falls, seven pins) on the season, and is now 50-9 with 10 pins and 29 technical falls in her college career.
Katie Lange (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) followed up at 143 pounds with a 60-second pin of Anna Strand, improving to 25-6 on the year with her eighth pin of the season and 20th bonus-point win (with 12 technical falls). Lange, the No. 3-ranked 143-pounder nationally, claimed three takedowns and an exposure before scoring the pin.
Brooklyn Hays (FY, Lindon, Utah/Pleasant Grove HS), ranked No. 5 nationally at 155 pounds, moved up to 170 pounds and scored a 1:56 pin of Tabitha Breitrick, building a 6-0 lead on two takedowns and an exposure before ending the match in the first period. Hays is now 28-9 with a team-best 18 pins and four technical falls on the season, including a 6-2 record with five pins when competing at 170.
Faith Tuttle (SR, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) closed the match with an impressive 1:11 pin of Taylor Schulz, improving to 13-6 on the year and 46-23 in her career. Tuttle scored a takedown and a quick exposure, pushing forward for her fourth pin of the season and 19th of her college career.
Gabrielle Torgerson (SR, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) opened the competitive portion of the match with a 10-0, 5:17 technical fall of Abby Nelson. The No. 8-ranked 123-pounder nationally, Torgerson scored two takedowns in the first period and three takedowns in the second period to end the bout early. Torgerson is now 23-8 on the year with 10 technical falls and eight pins, and is 63-23 with 22 technical falls and 24 pins in her college career.
At 130, Autumn Flanigan (JR, Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) used three takedowns and an exposure to claim an 8-2 win over Amor Tuttle, improving to 18-13 on the season.
FOR THE FOES
Jade Herzer scored the lone competitive victory for the Pointers at 155 pounds, upsetting No. 2-ranked Marlynne Deede (SR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) 5-2, taking advantage of an early four-point throw and countering Deede the rest of the way. The win was the second for Herzer over Deede in three career collegiate meetings.
