Auggies pin their way to 40-12 victory
MINNEAPOLIS — Scoring pins in five of eight bout victories, including the last four in a row, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team closed its 2022-23 regular season with a 40-12 dual-meet victory over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon.
Augsburg, the No. 3-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III tournament rankings and No. 2 in the dual-meet rankings, trailed Concordia 12-6 after the opening three bouts of the dual, but won the final seven bouts, including a major decision and four pins, to score the meet win. Concordia entered the match ranked No. 24 in the NWCA dual-meet rankings.
The Auggies claimed 14 takedowns to Concordia’s three, adding two reversals and four near-falls in the dual.
No. 10-ranked 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (SO, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) started the end-of-match pin run for the Auggies with a 3:22 win over Concordia’s Alex Rapelje, earning his 12th pin of the year and improving to 21-6 on the season. Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS), ranked No. 4 at 184, improved to 25-5 with his ninth pin, ending his match with Connor Chloupek with three seconds left in the second period.
At 197, No. 7-ranked Parker Venz (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) scored his team-leading 18th pin of the season, moving to 23-6 with a 3:12 win over 2021 national runner-up Gabe Zierden. No. 6-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) improved to 30-1 on the year and 99-21 in his career with his 15th pin, ending his match with Mason Swanson in 1:24. The pin was Kim’s 46th of his college career.
Derek Steele (SO, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) opened the dual with his sixth pin of the season, a 1:31 win over Kie Anderson.
No. 2-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) pulled away in the final two periods in a 14-1 major-decision win over Tyler Bents, using a takedown and four-point near-fall in the second period, and a pair of takedowns in the third, to score the win. Now 23-3 on the season, Shilson now has 18 bonus-point wins (two major decisions, 12 technical falls, five pins).
No. 5-ranked 165-pounder Cooper Willis (FY, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) used an escape in the second period and a takedown in the third period to score a 3-0 win over Elijah Hunt, improving to 24-6 on the season. Lucas Jagodzinske (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) improved to 30-8 with a 7-2 triumph over Jacob Prunty at 149.
FOR THE FOES
No. 5-ranked 133-pounder Ty Bisek improved to 25-1 with a 4:28 pin of Cade Willis (SO, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS), and 141-pounder Cade Lundeen turned a reversal into a 1:31 pin of No. 5-ranked Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 361-57-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 52 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly Division III opponents, Augsburg is 347-56-1 since the 1979-80 season and 270-46-1 since 1989-90.
Against fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools, Augsburg is now 216-7 since the 1975-76 season. Augsburg is now 30-3 in the all-time series against Concordia-Moorhead, and has won its last eight duals in a row over the Cobbers.
Suaturday’s dual was the final collegiate home event for five Augsburg seniors — Shilson, Kim, Brady Gross (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Tanner Kroells (SR, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) and Erick Ramos (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS).

Augsburg will attempt to qualify wrestlers to the NCAA Division III National Championships at the Upper Midwest Regional, to be held Feb. 25-26 at Concordia University-Wisconsin in Mequon, Wis. Concordia hosts St. John’s on Tuesday, February 14th at 7:00 pm.
