Mavericks host Minot State and travel to Augustana this week
Minnesota State opens the week at home, starting with a Thursday dual against Minot State at 5:30 p.m. The Mavericks travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face Augustana on Saturday at 7 p.m. Minnesota State holds a 5-3 dual record, 2-3 in the NSIC.
The Beavers are 6-8 overall, with a 1-5 NSIC record. Minot State’s lone ranked wrestler is 285-pounder Jake Swirple, who is ranked ninth. Head coach, Evan Forde, is in his eighth year with the Beavers and has a career record of 26-76.
Augustana is 3-3 in NSIC duals and 8-9 overall. The Vikings are ranked #14 nationally, with six wrestlers ranked in the Top 12 of the NWCA Poll as of Jan. 23, 2023. Augustana is led by head coach Jason Reitmeier, who owns a 210-104 record throughout 19 years with the program.
Last Time Out: The Mavericks split a pair of road duals last week, falling to Northern State, 19-17, before bouncing back to defeat MSU Moorhead, 30-9.
The Makovsky File: In his 30th year with Minnesota State, head coach Jim Makovsky holds an impressive 301-130-3 career record, the most in program history. Makovsky has coached 12 Individual National Champions, 95 NCAA All-Americans, and has been inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
In the Rankings: A pair of Mavericks are ranked in the NWCA DII Coaches Poll. Senior Brock Luthens, is 12th at 141-pounds and is 19-3 on the season, with a 6-1 dual record. At 285-pounds, senior Darrell Mason, a senior from Chicago, Ill., is seventh, owning a record of 7-2 overall, 3-2 in duals.
National Champions: Minnesota State boasted two national champions in the 2021-22 season. Senior Trevor Turiff finished the year 21-3 as the 174 lb. national champion. Turiff was named an NCAA All-American and the NSIC Outstanding Senior Wrestler of the Year. Darrell Mason went 22-0 at 285 pounds, winning a national championship. Mason gained many accolades, including NCAA All-American, NSIC Wrestler of the Year, and NWCA DII Wrestler of the Year.
