SJU Travels to Wisconsin for NCAA Regional

Saint John’s wrestling competes at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional this Friday (1 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m.), Feb. 24-25, at Concordia’s (Wis.) R. John Buuck Field House, in Mequon, Wis.

The start of competition was moved from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The day’s matches go through the championship quarterfinals and consolation quarterfinals. The regional resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday and will award first through sixth at each weight class.

The top-three finishers in each of the region’s ten weight classes advance to the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held March 10-11 at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s visited Concordia for four exhibition matches last Tuesday (Feb. 14) in Moorhead.

Sophomore Logan Thorsten (Foley, Minn.) led the way by posting a pair of shutouts – a 12-0 major decision and a 6-0 decision – to improve to 9-13 on the season.

WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to SJU and the host Falcons, the NCAA Upper Midwest region consists of No. 3 Augsburg, Aurora (Ill.), Carthage (Wis.), Chicago (Ill.), Concordia-Moorhead, Elmhurst (Ill.), Lakeland (Wis.), the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), Pacific (Ore.), Wheaton (Ill.), No. 18 Wisconsin-Eau Claire, No. 7 Wisconsin-La Crosse, No. 22 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, No. 12 Wisconsin-Platteville, Wisconsin-Stevens Point and No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater.

LAST YEAR: SJU ended its 2021-22 season at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional last Feb. 25 (2022) on the campus of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Junior Hayden LeMonds (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) was dealt an 8-4 setback in his first match of the day at 165 pounds but bounced back with a pin of Lakeland’s (Wis.) David Aragon in 1:26. He fell to Elmhurst’s (Ill.) Jeff Nugent by pin in his second consolation bout.

Junior Ben Gilbertson (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) suffered an 8-1 loss to Concordia-Moorhead’s Kaden Spindler in his first match and exited the tournament with a narrow 5-4 defeat to Stephen Watson of Wheaton (Ill.) in a consolation prelim (pig-tail) at 174 pounds. He ended the season with a team-best 21-16 record.

Thorsten dropped a pair of close decisions at 149 pounds, 6-2 to UWEC’s Jake Drexler and 5-3 to K’den McMullin of Pacific (Ore.), to finish with a 16-12 record.
