17 Augsburg men’s wrestlers named Scholar All-Americans

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming a school-record 17 individual Scholar All-Americans, the most among NCAA Division III teams nationally, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team finished in 12th place in the 2022-23 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III academic team race, with a team grade point average of 3.605, it was announced on Thursday.

Seventeen Auggies were named NWCA Division III Scholar All-Americans:

  • Cole Becker (FY, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), an undecided major with a 3.82 GPA. He finished 33-5 this season.
  • Robert Beese (FY, Amery, Wis./Amery HS), a health and physical education major with 4.00 GPA. He finished 23-6 this season.
  • Karson Casper (FY, Coleman, Wis./Coleman HS), a chemistry major with a 4.00 GPA. He finished 20-10 this season.
  • Seth Goetzinger (SO, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS), an undecided major with a 3.81 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 28-9 this season and is 42-15 in his career. He earned All-American honors with a seventh-place national tournament finish at 174 pounds this season.
  • Brady Gross (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS), an exercise science major with a 4.00 GPA. A three-time Scholar All-American, he finished 31-8 this season and is 81-31 in his Augsburg career.
  • Blake Jagodzinske (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), a finance major with a 4.00 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 31-4 this season and is 44-9 in his college career.
  • Lucas Jagodzinske (FY, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), a finance major with a 4.00 GPA. He finished 30-8 this season.
  • Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), a communications major with a 3.65 GPA. A three-time Scholar All-American, he finished 37-2 this season and is 104-22 in his career. He earned All-American honors for the third time in his career with a third-place national tournament finish at 285 pounds this season.
  • Tanner Kroells (SR, Delano, Minn./Delano HS), a finance major with a 3.77 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 25-12 this season and is 50-24 in his career.
  • Brian Ramos (FY, Perham, Minn./Perham HS), an undecided major with a 3.83 GPA. He finished 20-5 this season.
  • Tyler Shilson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS), a finance major with a 4.00 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 29-5 this season and is 72-10 in his Augsburg career, and 100-34 in his college career. He earned All-American honors for the third time in his career with a second-place national tournament finish at 157 pounds this season.
  • Carter Sorenson (SO, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS), an education major with a 3.87 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 21-5 this season and is 35-9 in his career.
  • Derek Steele (SO, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS), an undecided major with a 3.27 GPA. A two-time Scholar All-American, he finished 19-9 this season and is 43-17 in his career.
  • Charlie Stuhl (SO, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), a finance major with a 4.00 GPA. A three-time Scholar All-American, he finished 32-6 this season and is 67-21 in his career. He earned All-American honors with an eighth-place national tournament finish at 149 pounds this season.
  • Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), a math education major with a 3.20 GPA. He finished 37-5 this season and is 57-10 in his Augsburg career, and 71-22 in his college career. He won the NCAA Division III national title at 141 pounds this season, earning All-American honors.
  • Adam Sylvester (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), a finance major with a 3.61 GPA. He finished 22-5 this season and is 40-12 in his career.
  • Parker Venz (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), an undecided major with a 3.46 GPA. He finished 28-9 this season and is 46-20 in his career. He was a national tournament qualifier at 197 pounds this season.

Since 1983, Augsburg has produced 202 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Augsburg has had 179 student-athletes honored since 1997. The 2022-23 campaign marks the fourth time in program history, and second in a row, in which the Auggies have had ten or more Scholar All-Americans. Since 1998, Augsburg has finished among the top 15 teams in the academic national listing 21 times, winning the academic national title three times.

Under fourth-year head coach Tony Valek, Augsburg won the NCAA Division III national championship for the 14th time in school history this season, earning seven All-Americans among its eight national tournament qualifiers. The Auggies finished 9-1 in dual meets and won the NWCA Division III National Duals title and NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional title this season.
