Mason Continues to Second Day of NCAA DII Tournament

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Minnesota State senior Darrell Mason went 2-1 to open the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships and has secured All-American status.

Mason, who is the sixth seed at 285-pounds picked up a thrilling win in his opening match against Daniel Scheib of Shippensburg. Both wrestlers traded escapes for the matches, only scoring in regulation.

Scheib went for a throw to start the overtime; however, Mason countered and put Scheib on his back to earn the fall.

After dropping a 6-2 decision to third-seeded Jared Campbell of Glenville State, Mason rebounded to beat Mason Watt of Chadron State, 3-2 to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket and secure his second All-American honor, becoming the 31st Maverick in school history to be a two-time All-American.

Mason’s takedown early in the first period proved to be the difference in the win over Watt as both wrestlers traded escapes to close out the scoring.

Mason will continue wrestling on Saturday morning, facing #2-seeded Lee Herrington of University Nebraska – Kearney. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m.
