Johnnies’ Gilbertson named At-Large Academic All-District

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Five Saint John’s student-athletes, including junior wrestler Ben Gilbertson (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), were named to the College Sports Communicators (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America, CoSIDA) Academic All-District at-large team on Tuesday, May 23.

Under a new format for the 2022-23 academic year, each institution may nominate up to five student-athletes for Academic All-District recognition in the at-large category, which includes men’s fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Nominees must be a sophomore or older with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher and participate in 50 percent of their team’s competitions.

Each Academic All-District awardee is now eligible for Academic All-America distinction, which will be voted on by organization members and announced on Wednesday, June 21.

The other Johnnies honored were senior golfer Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.), junior golfer Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area), senior hockey forward Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) and junior defenseman Jack Olsen (Lakeville, Minn.).

An elementary education major with a 3.76 GPA, Gilbertson posted a 16-11 record at 184 pounds for the SJU wrestling team, including nine bonus-point wins (two major decisions, three technical falls and four pins). He went 7-3 against non-Division III competition. Gilbertson begins his senior season with a 38-28 career record and ten pins.
