South Dakota State wrestler Tanner Sloan returns to the national stage this weekend, competing at the 2023 Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Sloan, who recently announced he will return to SDSU for his fifth and final collegiate season, is one of eight wrestlers entered in the freestyle division of the 92-kilogram weight class. The competition begins at 10 a.m. Central Time Saturday and concludes Sunday at Discovery Canyon Campus School. Video coverage of the event will be available through FloWrestling.org.
A native of Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan has previously qualified for two world championships. Last June, he won the 97-kilogram freestyle title at the United World Wrestling World Team Trials and went on to claim a silver medal at the U23 World Championship in Pontevedra, Spain.
His first appearance on the international scene came at the 2019 UWW Junior World Championships after winning gold at the Pan American Championship.
Sloan reached the national title bout in the 197-pound weight class at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, earning All-America honors for the first time. He finished the 2022-23 season with a 27-3 overall record and holds an 86-20 career mark at the collegiate level.
