Bianchini and Rachel named 2022-23 St. Cloud State Athletes of the Year

Joey Bianchini (Wrestling) and Linsey Rachel (Volleyball) earn department’s highest student-athlete honor

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Athletics has named wrestler Joey Bianchini and volleyball player Linsey Rachel the 2022-23 St. Cloud State Athletes of the Year. Both student-athletes earned three All-American honors while leading their respective programs to multiple conference championships and garnering many academic accolades in the classroom.

“Joey and Linsey have been true ambassadors of St. Cloud State Athletics both in the realm of competition and in the classroom,” said SCSU Director of Athletics Holly Schreiner, “The two embody many leadership traits that have allowed their respective programs to reach great success at the conference, regional and national levels. We are so proud of what they have done for their programs and Huskies Athletics on the whole. I can most certainly say that we were most fortunate to watch Joey and Linsey’s careers unfold at St. Cloud State and cannot wait to see what their futures hold.”

Joey Bianchini graduates as one the most highly decorated athletes in St. Cloud State Wrestling history, closing his career as a three-time NCAA All-American, four-time Super Region Champion, four-time NCAA Qualifier, and four-time All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) selection. The 2020 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) DII National Rookie of the Year went 87-6 (.936) with a 35-2 (.946) over his four years as a starter while leading the Huskies to an NCAA Championship in 2021, three top-four team finishes at the NCAA Tournament, four Super Region Championships and three NSIC Championships. Off the mat, Bianchini was a five-time NWCA Academic All-American, a 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-American and a four-time Academic All-NSIC honoree. A native of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, Bianchini graduated from IC Catholic Prep in 2018 and earned his degree in Marketing at St. Cloud State this spring.

Linsey Rachel graduates as one of the greatest athletes to represent St. Cloud State Volleyball, closing her career as the program’s career leader in kills, the program’s only three-time All-American and was named the 2022 NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year. Rachel led the Huskies to three NCAA Tournaments, a Sweet 16 appearance, two NSIC Tournament Championships and an NSIC Regular Season Championship while becoming the first 1500×1500 (Kills x Digs) Club member in program history. The 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Central Region and NSIC Freshman of the Year broke the program’s career kills record, graduates second all-time in career points and ranks fourth in career digs. Rachel earned three Academic All-NSIC honors off the court. A native of Maple Lake, Minnesota, Rachel graduated from Maple Lake High School in 2018 and earned her undergraduate degree in Real Estate in the fall of 2021 before completing her MBA this past fall.
