BURNSVILLE, Minn.- The Augustana wrestling team was selected to finish second in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll, announced by the conference office on Thursday morning. Reigning NCAA region and national runner-up Jaxson Rohman was selected as the Wrestler to Watch for the Vikings.
St. Cloud State was selected as the preseason favorite in the NSIC, earning 79 points and seven of 10 first place votes. The Vikings file in behind them, earning a first place vote and 65 points. In third is Parkside, earning the final two first place votes and accumulating 62 points. Rounding out the top five is UMary (58 points) and Northern State (52 points).
Head coach Jason Reitmeier enters his 21st season leading the Vikings, returning three NCAA qualifiers, with Rohman (125) joined by Hunter Burnett (141) and Cade Mueller (184), and nine regional starters from a team that placed second at the Super Region V tournament.
“We return a lot of regional placers and guys with big match experience, yet we have a good mix of youth in the room with the 22-23 and 23-24 class,” said Reitmeier. “I really like our depth at most weights which translates into great competition within the room. I am excited to see how this team comes together and grows as we get deeper into our competition season. I really feel our team has grown this off season mentally and physically putting in the work for both.”
Rohman, a junior from Trimont, Minn., has his eyes on a National Championship after finishing last season as a runner-up at 125 pounds. The AU Preseason Wrestler to Watch, Rohman earned DII All-American honors after closing last season with an 18-6 record overall and 13-4 record in duals.
“Jaxson is exactly what we are looking for in a student-athlete,” said Reitmeier. “He is confident in all areas of his life. He leads by example on the mat and in the classroom. The moment is never too big for him because of how he prepares both his mind and his body. We lean on Jaxson to be the spark for our team.”
After opening the season with a pair of Open Tournaments, Augustana gets its dual season underway in Brookings, South Dakota, on Nov. 18. Augustana opens its NSIC slate on the road at Northern State on Dec. 7, before opening their home schedule against Parkside on Dec. 9 inside the Elmen Center.
