Auggie women open season at UW-Stevens Point Open

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Nina Makem (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished in second place in the 155-pound weight class, leading the Augsburg University women’s wrestling team at the season-opening University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointer Open on Saturday.

Makem, the No. 4-ranked 136-pounder in the National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason national rankings for NCAA-affiliated schools, opened the season at 155 pounds and finished second, going 3-1. She claimed a pin and technical fall in her first two matches, then dispatched No. 6-ranked 155-pounder Noelle Gaffney of Northern Michigan 6-0 in the semifinals. In the finals against No. 1-ranked 143-pounder London Houston of North Central (Ill.), the wrestlers tied 4-4, but a takedown by Houston with 23 seconds left gave her the criteria victory.

Melissa Jacobs (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) finished sixth at 191 pounds, and Gigi Gammell (FY, Chico, Calif./Chico HS) finished sixth at 101 pounds.
