Augsburg 33 UW-Eau Claire 7

Top-ranked Auggies win 8 of 10, top No. 8 Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Winning eight of 10 bouts in the varsity dual, including five by bonus-point margins, the top-ranked Augsburg University men’s wrestling team scored a 33-7 victory over the No. 8-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Tuesday afternoon.

Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and top-ranked wrestler in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III rankings, claimed wins in eight of the 10 bouts in the dual, with two major decisions, two technical falls and a pin. Augsburg is 12-0 in the all-time series against the Blugolds.

The Auggies claimed 15 takedowns to UW-Eau Claire’s four, adding four reversals and four near-falls en route to the victory.

Top-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) remained unbeaten at 8-0 with the lone pin of the dual meet, a 4:36 match-ender against UW-Eau Claire’s Jackson Schichel. Kim now has four pins among his eight victories on the year, and is now 112-22 in his career with 56 pins.

Defending 141-pound national champion Sam Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) dominated in a 15-0, third-period technical fall win over Andrew Kested, using two takedowns and three near-falls to clinch the victory, improving to 5-0 on the year with his third bonus-point win.

After going 5-0 to win the 157-pound title at last weekend’s Augsburg Invitational, Kaden Reetz (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) kept his momentum going with an impressive 16-1 technical fall victory over Colten Sund, using three takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near fall to improve to 10-2 on the season. The win was his fourth by technical fall and his seventh bonus-point win of the campaign.

Top-ranked 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) improved to 7-1 with an 11-2 major decision win over No. 10-ranked Niall Schoenfelder, one of three Auggie wins in four meetings of ranked wrestlers on the afternoon. Schwanebeck-Ostermann claimed a three-point takedown in each period to build a commanding lead, improving to 89-29 in his college career with his 51st bonus-point win (21 major decisions, nine technical falls, 21 pins).

At 165 pounds, No. 4-ranked Cooper Willis (SO, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) extended his winning streak to six straight matches with a 9-3 triumph over No. 7-ranked Tristan Massie. Willis built an 8-0 lead after two periods, and held off a third-period takedown by Massie to improve to 9-1 on the season.

No. 5-ranked 149-pounder Charlie Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) improved to 9-2 on the season, winning a tight 2-1 decision over No. 12-ranked Zach Sato. Sato led 1-0 on an escape after two periods, but Stuhl gained a stalling point, then scored an escape of his own in the third period to claim the win.

Tyler Raway (SO, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had a strong match at 197 pounds, shutting out Ian Pepple 10-0. He scored a pair of takedowns and a reversal to build the lead, improving to 7-2 on the season.

Derek Steele (JR, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS), ranked No. 14 nationally at 125, opened the match with a 5-2 win over Carter Schultz, scoring a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal for his five points. Steele is now 10-2 on the campaign.

Augsburg also won 12 of 17 junior varsity matches against the Blugolds, with three pins, four technical falls and two major decisions among the 12 victories.

Top-ranked 133-pounder Tyler Fleetwood scored a 13-3 win for the Blugolds over Wyatt Kaczrowski (JR, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS), highlighted by a pair of four-point near-falls in the second period.

No. 2-ranked 174-pounder Jared Stricker collected an 11-4 win over Augsburg’s No. 6-ranked Seth Goetzinger (JR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS), using two takedowns, a reversal and two-point near-fall to counter Goetzinger’s reversal and two escapes.
