MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling will begin its 2023-24 dual campaign on Thursday, November 16 as the Dragons take on Jamestown in a 7 p.m. home dual. MSUM will also travel for Saturday’s Younes Hospitality Open, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney.
Live video and results will be available at msumdragons.com.
MSUM last competed at the annual DWU Open in Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday, November 11. Cody Wienen was the only Dragon place winner at the meet, earning a sixth place finish at 157 pounds. Wienen picked up five wins on his record at the tournament, including three wins by fall with one taking place just 36 seconds into the match. Wienen leads the Dragons with seven victories so far this season with four being by pinfall. The redshirt fresman is tied for the team lead in pins this season alongside fellow redshirt freshman Will Price. The 184-pounder picked up three more victories at the DWU Open as well. Price added a technical fall to his ledger at the tournament, too.
Also having a strong day on the mat for MSUM was 174-pounder Wayne Mellon. He rallied from a tough week at the Jimmie Open to earn three victories at the DWU Open. Gunnar Mogen, Jonas Anez and Jacob Reinardy would all grab a pair of wins each at the DWU Open with Reinardy winning his first two matches of the season by fall. Freshmen Anthony Sykora and Quade Peterson would also collect wins by fall on the day. The heavyweight Peterson earned his first two collegiate victories over the weekend with both being by pin.
Kris Nelson is in his 15th season as MSUM’s head wrestling coach.
