Dragons Set the Tone at Jimmie Open

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — MSU Moorhead wrestling began its 2023-24 campaign with a strong set of scuffles at the annual Jimmie Open. By day’s end, MSUM featured nine place winners across the open tournament.

The top finisher for MSUM was redshirt freshman Cody Wienen who claimed runner-up honors at 157 pounds. Wienen began his morning with a pinfall win over Jamestown’s Cutter Jones. The Thief River Falls, Minn., native would then collect a decision win before falling by major decision in the championship match against Minot State’s Kelby Armstrong. Isaiah Huus also had a strong start for the Dragons, placing third at 197 pounds. The mountainous Huus would pick up a decision win before nabbing his first pin of the season against Jamestown’s Deklan Goeden. The redshirt freshman would finish his day winning the third place match over Mary’s Marco Reyes, 13-2.

Gunnar Mogen would earn a fourth place finish at 149 pounds thanks to back-to-back pinfall wins to open the morning. Mogen kicked off his season with a pin in 37 seconds against University of Saskatchewan’s Ashton Bonarchuk. True freshman Hunter Heim would take sixth at 125 pounds as he would grab a pair of wins, one by major decision. True freshmen Tyson Ullyott, Caden Rose, Cooper Ochsendorf and Anthony Sykora would all register their first collegiate victories at the tournament. Ochsendorf would place eighth at 174 pounds while Sykora finished in sixth at the same weight class. Both freshmen would collect their first career pins during the tournament as well.

Parker Benz would collect sixth-place honors with a pair of pins and a tech fall victory at 149 pounds. Rounding out the Dragon place winners was 184-pounder Will Price, who rallied after dropping his first match to win three straight by pinfall. Price finished sixth at 184 pounds after falling by major decision in the fifth-place match to Concordia’s Connor Chloupek.

Other MSUM competitors picking up wins today were Shad Cano (133 pounds) by major decision, Hunter Hayes (141 pounds) by fall, Jonas Anez (165 pounds) by both fall and tech fall and Wayne Mellon (174 pounds) by fall.
