Four Mavericks Take the Top of the Podium at Opens

Mavericks Travel to Auggie Open and Lindenwood Open for the Weekend

Mankato, Minn. – The Mavericks split squads this weekend, attending the Auggie Open in Minneapolis, Minn. and the Lindenwood Open in St. Charles, Mo.

In the Freshman Bracket the at Auggie Open, 184-lb. freshman Grant Cook had two matches to take first place in the tournament. Cook had a quick first match with a fall in the first period at 1:28. In the championship match, Cook beat Daevon Vereen from Sioux Falls by a 9-8 decision.

Placing third in the freshman bracket were Brian Thilges and Makota Misgen. Thilges (184-lbs.) had two falls, one at 3:27 and another at 1:12 to finish 2-1 on the day. Misgen (285-lbs.) followed suit with two falls and a decision win to be atop the podium in third with a record of 3-1.

Also placing in the freshman bracket was Irie Jackson (125-lbs.) and Aden Welcome (157-lbs.). Jackson won by fall to start his morning, as well as had a tech fall win of 18-2, and finished fifth today. After receiving a bye and winning by decision, Welcome went on to place sixth at the open.

In the Gold Bracket, Jett Thoreson, at 157 pounds, and Tanner Gaffey, at 285 pounds, both placed fifth. Thoreson finished with a 5-1 record which included two falls and a major decision win. After an overtime loss to start, Gaffey went on to hold a 4-2 record on the day.

Three Mavericks placed at the Lindenwood Open Saturday down in Missouri.

Sophomore Caleb Meunier, at 157 pounds, started the day 4-0 with a fall at 1:26 and a major decision win of 10-1. To end the day, Meunier won by a 4-0 decision against Logan Swaw of Illinois.

Meunier also competed in the True Champion match of the A and B brackets. Meunier won by fall at 5:51 against unattached Xerarch Tungjaroenkul.

At 165 pounds, Kole Marko started strong with three falls in the first two minutes of each match. After another win by major decision, Marko beat Connor Svantner (Triton CC) by a 19-4 tech fall.

Freshman Evan Farley was the Mavericks final placer for the day. Farley received a bye to start the day, followed with a fall at 2:15 and tech fall win of 19-1 to put him in the semifinals. His major decision win put him into the championship match, and he finished with a 3:57 fall to win.
