Makem wins title for Auggies at Waldorf Open

FOREST CITY, Iowa — Nina Makem (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) won the individual title at 155 pounds, leading the Augsburg University women’s wrestling team at the Waldorf University Open on Saturday.

Makem, the No. 4-ranked 136-pounder in the National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason national rankings for NCAA-affiliated schools, scored her first tournament victory of the season at 155 pounds, going 4-0. She opened with a 22-second pin and a win by injury default, then topped Anastasia Hardin of Missouri Baptist, the No. 10-ranked 155-pounder in the NAIA national rankings, 8-0 in the semifinals. In the finals, she claimed a 10-0, 1:42 technical fall victory over Keeley Kehrli of Simpson (Iowa). Makem is now 7-1 on the season.

Six Auggie wrestlers competed at the open meet. Gigi Gammell (FY, Chico, Calif./Chico HS) claimed her first collegiate victory at 101 pounds, a 3:29 pin of Jessica Romo of Dickinson State (N.D.).
