Meunier and Cook Take Second Place at Luther Open

Minnesota State Boasts Seven Placers in Decorah, Iowa

Mankato, Minn. – Sophomore Caleb Meunier and freshman Grant Cook led the Elite and Silver Brackets at the Luther Open today in Decorah, Iowa with second place finishes.

Meunier breezed through his first two matches with a tech fall and fall at two minutes to start the day. With two more wins and then a loss in the final match, Meunier finished the day 4-1 and second on the podium.

Following in Meunier’s footsteps, Cook began the day with a major decision and a fall within the first period. After another win, Cook found himself in the championship match, and finally finished second at the end of the day.

Brian Thilges, Evan Farley, Lucas Ryan, and Trayton Anderson all placed third in Saturday’s tournament. Thilges had two major decision wins and a fall within the first period to finish the day 4-1. Farley had an impressive day with three falls and two tech falls to hold a 5-1 record for the day. Ryan had a bye to start, followed by two wins, and closed out the day 4-1. Similar to Farley, Anderson had two tech fall wins and a fall at 2:52 to get to the semifinal match. After a loss, Anderson had a fall at 0:58 to place third.

Kole Marko was Minnesota State’s final placer, finishing fifth with a record of 5-1.

In a statement from Assistant Coach Bryce Andrews, “The Luther Open was an awesome early season test for our team to gauge where we’re at this point of the season. Our team had the opportunity to face competition from some of the top teams in D2, D3, Junior College and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
