MITCHELL, S.D. — MSU Moorhead wrestling continued its early season stretch of open tournaments as the Dragons had another strong showing at the annual DWU Open.
Cody Wienen turned in another strong showing for the Dragons as we would collect five wins to place sixth at 157 pounds. The redshirt freshman had three wins by pinfall on the day, headlined by pin in 36 seconds against Charlie Hutson of Fort Hays State. Wienen was the lone placewinner for the Dragons on the day.
Redshirt freshman Wayne Mellon picked up three wins for MSUM on the day including one by fall and another by major decision at 174 pounds. Will Price would also take home three wins for the Dragons as he grabbed another pinfall victory as well as a tech fall win over Morningside’s Brett Tryon.
At 149 pounds, Gunnar Mogen continued to show his talents in open tournament formats, winning a pair of matches by major decision for the Dragons. Jonas Anez would have a similar day at 165 pounds, winning a pair of matches by decision of Johnathon Vincent of York and Ashton Labelle of Southwest Minnesota State. Also at 165 pounds, Jacob Reinardy would win a pair of matches by fall, including a win in 66 seconds over Minot State’s Brody Mohr.
Freshmen Anthony Sykora (174 pounds) and Quade Peterson (heavyweight) would each pick up wins by fall on the day. Sykora would get a quick win over Jua Urbina of Fort Hays State while Peterson collected his first collegiate win with two pinfall wins.
Other Dragons collecting wins today were Hunter Heim (125 pounds), Dane Christopherson (125 pounds) and Hunter Hayes (141 pounds).
