MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team continues action this Saturday in Kearney, Neb., for the Younes Hospitality Open.
SMSU third-year head coach Chayse Jackson expects 13 athletes to compete at the open, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Last Time Out: The Mustangs come in after having five different place winners at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday, Nov. 11 … Caden Steffen led the way, going 4-0 to place first at 197. He won his first three matches against NSIC opponents. In the championship match, Steffen matched up against Tereus Henry, who is currently ranked third at 197 lbs in Division 2; Steffen dominated the match, picking up a decisive 10-4 decision victory. … Lucas Hodges and Adam Sylvester each competed at 184, with Hodges placing 2nd, winning his first four matches before losing the championship match, and Sylvester winning his first match, before losing his second match to Tyson Lien before winning five more matches, including a second chance against Lien in the third-place match. … Carlo Arreola placed 4th at 125, picking up a fall victory in under a minute and an 11-5 decision victory, before falling to Jaxson Rohman, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 and losing the third-place match by a 12-7 decision. … Caden Young wrestled unattached at the DWU open, going 4-2, with two major decisions and two decision victories.

Following Saturday, the Mustangs will return to action with a busy three-day trip. Friday, Dec. 1, SMSU will travel to Bismarck, N.D., to face UMary in its first conference dual meet. The following day, Dec. 2, the team will travel to Minot, N.D., to face Minot State. SMSU will then compete in the Dragon Open at MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Dec. 3.
