Mustangs start strong with impressive showing at Yellowjacket Open

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened its open season on Saturday with four different place winners at the RCTC Yellowjacket Open.

Kody Marschner (unattached) led the way for the Mustangs, beginning the open with back-to-back wins by fall. Marschner then rattled off three consecutive decision victories to claim first place at 285 lbs in the frosh/soph division.

Caden Young (unattached) competed in the open division and after a loss in his first match, came back to pick up a 9-7 decision win to place second at 165.

Carlo Arreola competed at 125 lbs in the frosh/soph division. Arreola won a pair of matches by decision to work his way into the semifinals, where he lost a close 6-5 decision, before winning a 9-3 decision in the third-place match.

“Overall, today was a great experience for our younger athletes.” Said third-year head coach Chayse Jackson. They got to compete at a tough tournament with high level competition. The team showed a lot of promise and the future is bright! Everyone had great moments and we are taking home things to work on. We can’t ask for more! Along with that, we had several placers and a champ out of our freshman. The stangs are moving up, #Letsride.”
