Minnesota State Cruises To Three Victories at the Cactus Duals

PEORIA, Ariz. — Minnesota State picked up three victories Saturday as it hosted the Cactus Duals in Peoria, Ariz.

The Mavericks yielded just seven team points over the three duals, outscoring its opponents 135-7, picking up a 44-4 victory over Simon Fraser, a 41-3 victory over Colorado State Pueblo and a 50-0 win over Arizona Christian.

“The main thing we wanted to see was our team come together,” said head coach Jim Makovsky. “We were able to wrestle loose and stack points today.”

In Minnesota State’s opening victory over Simon Fraser the Mavericks collected bonus points in all nine victories. The Mavericks picked up falls from sophomore 157-pounder Caleb Meunier in 4:42 and junior 174-pounder Drake Hayward in 6:38. Redshirt junior 141-pounder Trayton Anderson, sophomore 165-pounder Kole Marko and senior 184-pounder Gavin Christoffersen all recorded tech falls in the victory as well.

It as was more of the same in the victory over Colorado State Pueblo for Minnesota State, as Anderson (6:59) and Christoffersen (3:13) along with redshirt freshman 133-pounder Chase Beckett (1:18) all picked up pins. Redshirt freshman 285-pounder Tanner Gaffey won by disqualification after he forced his opponent into five stall warnings.

In the finale, five Mavericks earned falls against Arizona Christian. Beckett picked up his second pin of the day in 4:02, while Marko stuck his opponent in 1:27. Hayward added his second pin of the day in 1:44 while Chirstoffersen registered his pin in just 55 seconds. Rounding out those with falls was junior Isaiah Mlsna who earned a pin in 2:01 at 149 pounds. Meunier also picked up a 15-0 technical fall in the win.

Minnesota State (3-0) returns to action Jan. 6 as it participates in the Central Invitational. The Mavericks open NSIC action Jan. 12 when they host Minot State.
