NDSU Tops Purdue at Campbell Duals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – North Dakota State wrestling would pick up a win over Purdue, as the Bison went 1-2 overall at the Campbell Camel Duals on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to close out the fall semester schedule. The Bison fell to host Campbell before defeating the Boilermakers. NDSU closed out the day with a loss to No. 19 Stanford.

RV Campbell 30, North Dakota State 13
The Bison opened up the duals against host Campbell, falling to the Camels 30-13. After the forfeit at 125 pounds, Fernando Barreto nearly pulled off a come-from-behind upset at 133 pounds but fell to #14 Domenic Zaccone 9-8.

At 141 pounds, #28 Gavin Drexler then secured a bonus-point victory, winning 9-1 over Chris Rivera for the first Bison points in the dual. However, #9 Kellyn March would fall on a late takedown at 149 pounds in a 4-1 decision.

Landen Johnson then gave the Bison more bonus points, as he secured an upset pin of #27 Chris Earnest in the second period after dominating the match and leading 10-3 at the time of the fall. However, Campbell answered right back with a second-period pin of Brendan Howes at 165 pounds.

The Bison would pick up their final win at 174 pounds as #30 Gaven Sax upset #21 Austin Murphy with a late takedown and six unanswered points in a 6-3 victory. Campbell would then close the match with a major decision, decision, and tech fall in the upper weights.

North Dakota State 22, RV Purdue 17
North Dakota State would give head coach Obenson Blanc his first career win in the matchup against Purdue, as the Bison dominated early. After giving up the forfeit at 125 pounds, the Bison went on a run, winning the next three matches and never trailing after they gained the lead.

At 133 pounds, Barreto dominated his match with a pair of takedowns in each period to secure a tech fall at 6:32, winning 18-3. Drexler then secured a reversal to start the second period and added a third-period takedown and riding time point to win 6-1 over Greyson Clark at 141 pounds. Max Petersen then got the run out at 149 pounds, came from behind, and secured a late takedown to win 10-7 over Marcos Polanco.

Purdue would then pick up a victory at 157 pounds as #18 Joey Blaze defeated Landen Johnson 10-3. However, Howes would answer right back for the Bison, as he upset #22 Stoney Buell with a dominating 10-2 major decision.

North Dakota State would continue its run, as Sax then recorded a pair of takedowns, a reversal, and a four-point nearfall to help cruise to a 13-1 major decision at 174 pounds. Following a major decision for Purdue at 184 pounds, Spencer Mooberry would secure the dual for the Bison at 197 pounds, as he came from behind to win 10-8 with a couple of takedowns and a riding time point.

#19 Stanford 26, North Dakota State 17
After the forfeit at 125 pounds, Barreto would start the dual off strong for the Bison as he secured a 4-3 decision over Dom Lajoie. However, #27 Jason Miranda would give Stanford another six-point win as he secured a pin at 141 pounds from a losing position over Drexler. After Drexler had two takedowns to take a 6-1 lead, Miranda secured a reversal before the fall at 2:30.

Max Petersen would answer back with a bonus-point victory, as he secured a 17-3 major decision win after five takedowns in a win at 149 pounds over Dawson Sihavong. However, Stanford recorded their own 17-3 major decision, as #8 Daniel Cardenas defeated Johnson at 157 pounds. Stanford would then add an 8-2 decision as #16 Hunter Garvin defeated Howes at 165 pounds.

Sax would complete an undefeated day for him at 174 pounds in come-from-behind fashion as he defeated Tye Monteiro by a major decision at 16-8. Monteiro had two takedowns and an 8-1 lead before Sax scored 15 unanswered. Sax scored a reversal to end the first period. Then scored a two-point nearfall in a ride out during the second. In the third, Sax scored another reversal and then added a pair of four-point nearfalls and a riding time point at the end.

Stanford would then secure the match with a 10-3 win at 184 pounds before #14 Nick Stemmet sealed the victory with a major decision over Lathan Duda, 14-4. Devon Dawson would close out the dual with a pin over Peter Ming in the second period. After Ming selected a neutral start, Dawson, who was trailing 7-0, secured a takedown and recorded the pin at 3:26.

North Dakota State will be off until the new year, when the Bison ring in 2024 at the Southern Scuffle on January 1-2. The Bison will be making their fourth trip to the Southern Scuffle, with the two-day event taking place inside the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
