Nina Makem wins title for Auggies at North Central Open

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Nina Makem (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) claimed her second tournament title of the season at 155 pounds, leading the Augsburg University women’s wrestling team at the North Central University Open on Sunday.

Makem, the No. 5-ranked 155-pounder in the National Wrestling Coaches Association national rankings for NCAA-affiliated schools, went 4-0 on the day with three first-period technical falls, outscoring her first three opponents by a 30-0 margin in a total wrestling time of 4:33. She claimed an injury default win in the finals to improve to 14-1 on the season and 70-13 in her Auggie career. Of her 14 wins this season, she has four pins and six technical falls, and she has 15 pins and 41 technical falls in her college career.

Autumn Flanigan (SR, Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) went 3-2 for the Auggies at 136 pounds, winning two matches by first-period pins. She is now 4-2 on the season and 49-28 in her college career.

Melissa Jacobs (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) went 3-2 with a pair of first-period pins at 191 pounds, improving to 7-8 on the season.

North Central College Women’s Open Results

Augsburg, ranked No. 18 in the latest NWCA team national rankings, is now idle for the holiday break, and returns to action at the NWCA Women’s Wrestling National Duals on Jan. 5-6 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
