St. Cloud State 48 MSU Moorhead 0

SCSU earns bonus points in nine of 10 matches

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 5 St. Cloud State Wrestling (4-0, 2-0 NSIC) dominated Minnesota State Moorhead (1-1, 0-1), 48-0 in its home-opening dual of the 2023-24 season on Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies swept all 10 matches and earned bonus points in nine victories, including one by fall and seven by technical fall.

The 48-0 win was the largest margin of victory for the Huskies over the Dragons and the most points scored in a dual since the Huskies beat Southwest Minnesota State by the same score on Feb. 16, 2023.

The dual started at 157 pounds, where top-ranked junior Nick Novak (New Prague, Minn.) wasted no time in his match against Cody Wienen, as he scored a takedown, a four-point near fall and a three-point near fall in the opening period to snag a 10-1 lead after three minutes. A second period takedown and four-point near fall secured him a 18-1 technical fall at 4:48.

The win started a run of six consecutive bonus points victories to open the match for the Huskies. Graduate 165-pounder Anthony Herrera (Stansbury Park, Utah), ranked No. 3 in his weight class followed next, as he scored the only fall of the dual for the Huskies. He was well on his way to earning a technical fall of his own, leading 17-3 heading into the third period before registering a pin at the 5:50 mark over Jacob Reinardy.

The Huskies then recorded four consecutive technical falls between 174 pounds and heavyweight as redshirt sophomore Bryce Dagel (Eden Prairie, Minn.), redshirt sophomore Tyson Meyer (Glenwood, Minn.), redshirt senior Dominic Murphy and redshirt freshman Donnie Hidden (Washington, Ill.) all scored five points to give SCSU a 31-0 lead. Hidden made his Halenbeck Hall dual debut in his match and needed just the first period to record a 17-1 technical fall over Quade Peterson. He scored two takedowns and three near falls en route to his victory.

Redshirt freshman Archer Heelan (Kearney, Neb.) earned a 7-0 victory at 125 pounds before the Huskies finished with two technical falls and a major decision. Redshirt junior Sam Spencer (Huntley, Ill.) won 21-6 over Thomas Carrillo at 133 pounds, while No. 11 redshirt sophomore Alyeus Craig (Wichita, Kan.) flirted with a technical fall before winning 15-1 over Hunter Hayes.

No. 11 redshirt junior Colby Njos (Anoka, Minn.) finished off the dual in his season debut, as he needed just 5:18 to register a 17-1 technical fall over Gunnar Mogen.

“It was nice to wrestle in front of our great Husky fans today,” said Head Coach Steve Costanzo. “I’m proud of our team wrestling hard and seeking out bonus points today. We look forward to giving the guys a little bit of rest before attacking the second half of the season hard, beginning with the National Duals tournament in January.”

MSU Moorhead competes at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday, December 16 beginning at 10 a.m. SCSU will next head to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the NWCA National Duals, set for Jan. 5-6. The Huskies are the returning NWCA National Duals champions after winning their seventh National Duals title last season.
