No. 1/2 Augsburg tops No. 4/3 UW-La Crosse 23-12

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Winning six of 10 bouts in the dual meet, including four by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team scored a 23-12 victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a battle of top-five teams in the NCAA Division III poll on Saturday afternoon.

Augsburg, the No. 1-ranked team in the NWCA’s Division III tournament national rankings and No. 2 team in the dual-meet rankings, won the opening three bouts of the dual, all by major-point decisions. UW-La Crosse, ranked No. 4 in the NWCA tournament rankings and No. 3 in the dual-meet rankings, cut into the Auggie advantage with a pair of wins, but Augsburg clinched the victory with three more wins, including a technical fall.

Top-ranked 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) extended his personal winning streak to 17 straight matches with a 21-4, third-period technical fall win over UW-La Crosse’s No. 10-ranked Marcus Orlandoni. Schwanebeck-Ostermann scored four takedowns, a three-point near-fall, and a four-point near-fall to dominate the match, improving to 20-1 on the year with his seventh technical fall. Of his 20 wins, 18 are by bonus-point margins (five pins, seven technical falls, six major decisions).

Two first-year Auggies opened the match with major decision wins. Austin Laudenbach (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored his first collegiate major decision with a 14-2 triumph at 125 pounds, improving to 13-11 on the season. Laudenbach built a 10-1 lead after one period on two takedowns and a four-point near-fall, then used another four-point near-fall to take a 14-1 advantage after two periods.

Making his first varsity dual-meet start, Chance Suddeth (FY, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS) claimed a 17-5 victory at 133 pounds, improving to 12-4 on the year. Suddeth won his bout on the strength of five takedowns, taking a 10-3 lead into the third period.

Defending 141-pound national champion Sam Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), currently ranked No. 6 nationally, scored a 10-1 major decision win over Sam Lorenz, improving to 17-3 on the year with 12 bonus-point wins (five pins, three technical falls, four major decisions). Leading 5-0 after two periods, Stuhl clinched the major decision with a stalling point and a takedown late in the third period.

No. 3-ranked 165-pounder Cooper Willis (SO, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) improved to a team-best 23-1 with his 20th straight victory, a 3-0 win over Tate Flege. Scoreless going into the third period, Willis claimed a reversal and riding time point for the win.

No. 3-ranked 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (JR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) improved to 21-3 on the season with a 12-7 win over Leo Draveling. Leading 6-4 after one period, Goetzinger expanded his lead with a reversal and takedown in the second period, fighting off three escapes in the final two periods by Draveling.

All four of UW-La Crosse’s wins came in meetings of ranked wrestlers. At 149, No. 3-ranked Tyler Goebel scored an 8-1 win over No. 2-ranked Charlie Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), and at 157, top-ranked Nolan Hertel scored a 10-4 win over No. 8-ranked Blake Jagodzinske (JR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), Both Goebel and Hertel are unbeaten, at 15-0 and 18-0 respectively.

The Eagles closed the match with two straight wins, as No. 8-ranked 197-pounder Ben Kawczynski edged No. 3-ranked Parker Venz (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), and No. 3-ranked heavyweight Michael Douglas topped No. 4-ranked Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) 6-2.

Augsburg hosts Wartburg College (Iowa) in the annual “Battle of the Burgs” next Friday (1/26) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. Wartburg is ranked No. 2 in the NWCA’s tournament rankings and No. 1 in the dual-meet rankings after edging Augsburg 21-19 in the finals of the NWCA Division III National Duals on Jan. 6 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
