Augsburg takes 2nd at NWCA D-III National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — For the 15th time since 2002, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team recorded a top-two finish at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals, earning runner-up honors on Saturday afternoon at the UNI-Dome.

Augsburg, the No. 1-ranked team in the NWCA’s Division III tournament and dual-meet national rankings, opened Saturday’s action with a 37-11 victory over No. 6/4-ranked North Central College (Ill.), but No. 2-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) won its 12th National Duals crown, winning six of 10 bouts in a 21-19 triumph over the Auggies in the finals.

Against North Central, Augsburg trailed 8-0 after surrendering a technical fall and decision in the opening two bouts. But the Auggies stormed back with wins in the next seven bouts, with five pins, to clinch the semifinal victory.

Top-ranked 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS), No. 2-ranked 149-pounder Charlie Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) and No. 3-ranked 165-pounder Cooper Willis (SO, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) each won both of their matches on Saturday, and Schwanebeck-Ostermann and Willis each went 4-0 on the weekend.

Schwanebeck-Ostermann reached a career milestone on Saturday, winning his 100th career match with a 2:37 pin of North Central’s Cole Cervantes. Schwanebeck-Ostermann followed it up with a 14-3 major decision win over Wartburg’s No. 9-ranked Kasey Ross. He improved to 19-1 on the season and is now 101-29 in his collegiate career. He now has 17 bonus point wins (five pins, six technical falls, six major decisions) on the season and 62 (25 pins, 13 technical falls, 24 major decisions) in his career.

Willis scored a pair of bonus-point wins over ranked opponents on Saturday, blanking No. 8-ranked Alex Villar of North Central in a 12-0 major decision, then scored his second pin of the weekend with a 2:50 triumph over No. 11-ranked Nathan Fuller of Wartburg. Willis is now 22-1 with 14 bonus-point wins (six pins, five technical falls, three major decisions) on the season, and 54-10 in his career.

Stuhl scored two dramatic victories to improve to 16-2 on the season, claiming a 4:11 pin of North Central’s Kenny Siwicki and a 5-2, overtime tiebreaker win over Wartburg’s No. 7-ranked Charlie Dojan. Stuhl improved to 83-23 in his Auggie career.

No. 8-ranked 157-pounder Blake Jagodzinske (JR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) scored a 52-second pin of North Central’s No. 2-ranked Javen Estrada. No. 3-ranked Seth Goetzinger (JR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) recorded a 3:43 pin against the Cardinals, and Tyler Raway (SO, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also scored a second-period pin against North Central at 197.

Top-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) suffered his first loss of the season with a 3-2, overtime tiebreaker loss to North Central’s No. 10-ranked Robby Bates, but bounced back with his 12th pin of the season, improving to 19-1 with a 2:15 pin against Wartburg.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
Since the NWCA began the Division III National Duals in 2002, the trophy has rested at either Augsburg or Wartburg (Iowa) in all but one year (Wisconsin-La Crosse won the title in 2022, when Augsburg and Wartburg did not compete). Augsburg has won the title eight times (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2018, 2019, 2023), while Wartburg has won the crown 12 times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2024). Augsburg has placed second seven times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2017, 2020, 2024), placed third twice (2008, 2011), placed fourth in 2014, sixth in 2015 and seventh in 2016.

Augsburg is now 68-17 in NWCA Division III National Duals competition since 2002. Augsburg also appeared in five NWCA National Duals competitions prior to the 2002 season, when the defending Division III national champion was invited to compete with Division I squads. Augsburg is 73-26 all-time in NWCA National Duals competition.

Augsburg and Wartburg will meet again in the annual “Battle of the Burgs” dual meet, to be held Jan. 26 at Augsburg’s Si Melby Hall.
