Augsburg-Wartburg “Battle of the Burgs” dual set for Friday

MINNEAPOLIS — The annual “Battle of the Burgs” dual meet, featuring the two teams that have dominated NCAA Division III men’s wrestling for the past three decades, will take place this Friday (1/26) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, between Augsburg University and Wartburg College (Iowa).

Augsburg (6-1 in dual meets), the defending NCAA Division III national champions, enters Friday’s dual as the No. 1-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division III tournament national rankings and No. 2-ranked team in the NWCA’s Division III dual-meet national rankings. Wartburg (13-0) is ranked No. 1 in the NWCA’s dual-meet rankings and No. 2 in the tournament rankings.

It is the second dual meet between the two programs this season, after Wartburg edged Augsburg 21-19 in the finals of the NWCA Division III National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 6. Wartburg has won the last seven dual meets in the all-time series, which the Knights lead 25-16.

The annual “Battle of the Burgs” dual meet features the two teams that have dominated NCAA Division III wrestling over the last three decades. Since 1995, every Division III national title has rested at either Augsburg or Wartburg, with defending national champion Augsburg winning 14 titles since 1991 and Wartburg winning 15 titles since 1996.

Seventeen wrestlers — eight Auggies and nine Knights — enter Friday’s dual ranked in the top 15 in their weight classes in the most recent NWCA Division III individual national rankings, including 11 top-five ranked wrestlers — seven Auggies and four Knights. There could be meetings of ranked wrestlers in seven of the 10 weight classes on Friday.
