Vikings Win Third Consecutive Dual, Knock Off MSUM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 17 Augustana wrestling team won its third consecutive match on Saturday afternoon, knocking off MSU Moorhead 34-6 at the Elmen Center.

The Vikings jump to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC, while the Dragons move to 1-3, 0-3.

Christian Olsen shot out of the gate at 125 pounds, clinically taking care of business with a first-period tech fall. Two takedowns, an escape, and 14 nearfall points got the job done. The victory moved him to 7-3 on the year and gave the Vikings a 5-0 lead.

At 133 pounds, John Babineau handled his opponent for his first victory of the season. Babineau earned a takedown in the first period and a takedown and escape in the second period. He secured the win in the third, cashing in on a third takedown to put AU ahead 8-0.

Kade Sammons opened his match at 141 with a pair of first-period takedowns, eventually leading 6-3 through two periods. Starting on bottom, Sammons flipped the script with a reversal and two-point nearfall before a riding point helped to claim a major decision and push the Viking lead to 12-0.

Extending the Viking win streak was Kyle Boeke, earning a major decision at 149 pounds to grow AU’s lead to 16-0. Boeke earned four takedowns, eight nearfall points, two escapes, and a riding point to take the bout 23-9.

After dropping a bout at 157, Payton Anderson got the Vikings back in the win column. After taking a 3-2 lead into the third period, Anderson recorded a reversal and riding point to finish out a decision and take a 19-6 lead.

That started a string of four consecutive wins for Augustana, continuing at 174 pounds. Coy Gunderson held control for the entirety of his match before closing out a third-period pin to push the Vikings to a 25-6 lead.

Danny Reynolds turned a scoreless first period into a 7-1 lead heading into the third period at 184 pounds. Reynolds rattled off three takedowns and a riding point from there to finish a major victory.

Closing the scoring for Augustana was Max Ramberg. At 197 pounds, Rambler carried three takedowns into the third period, where he added three more to close a 19-4 tech fall.
