Dykes enters top 10, Steffen moves up in latest NWCA poll

MANHEIM, Pa. – After splitting its weekend duals with Parkside and MSU Moorhead, the Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team has fallen one spot to No. 25 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Poll released on Monday.

SMSU is one of six NSIC schools ranked in the NWCA Top 25, with UW-Parkside leading the way, claiming the No. 4 spot in the rankings, St. Cloud State comes in right behind them at No. 5, UMary lands at 13, Augustana is ranked No. 14, while Northern State placed at No. 18.

Caden Steffen moved up to the No. 3 spot in the rankings at 197. The senior wrestler is 12-1 on the season and 5-0 in NSIC duals. Steffen has earned victories over No. 6 Matt Kaylor (UMary) and No. 11 Max Ramberg (Augustana) so far this season. The fourth and final member of the NSIC to be ranked in the NWCA 197-pound rankings is Dominic Murphy (St. Cloud State), whose only losses this season have come against No. 1 Dalton Abney and No. 7 Anthony Yacovetti.

Jacob Dykes entered the top 10 at 285. Dykes is 9-5 so far this season, is 4-1 in NSIC duals, and has earned victories over Devon Rice (Newberry), who is currently ranked No. 11 in the NWCA rankings, and No. 7 Jake Swirple (Minot State). Dykes earned a pair of bonus point victories this weekend with a fall victory over Parkside’s Lloyd Reynolds and a major decision over MSU Moorhead’s Airin Spell. The third and final member of the NSIC to be ranked at 285 pounds is UMary’s Luke Tweeton.

National Wrestling Coaches Association DII Poll

The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn., to take on the No. 5 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies. The dual is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
