Johnnies Wrestle Saturday at Itasca

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s participated in two competitions last week.

Minnesota North-Itasca 31, at Saint John’s 16 (Jan. 4)
The Johnnies suffered a 31-16 loss to No. 18 (NJCAA) Minnesota North-Itasca last Thursday afternoon (Jan. 4) in Sexton Arena. SJU (1-1 dual record) earned three bonus-point wins but forfeited the match at 149 pounds and injury defaulted the bout in the second period at 184.

Freshman Connor Krueger (Superior, Wis.) put SJU on the scoreboard with a second-period pin at 141 pounds. Itasca tallied 22-straight points, including a pair of narrow decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, before the Johnnies posted wins in the final two matches. Freshman Aidan Wayne (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) posted a pin at 197 pounds and freshman Cody Kwak (Ridgeland, Wis./Menomonie) collected a 15-4, major decision at heavyweight.

Freshman Jawahn Cockfield (St. Paul, Minn./Stillwater Area) made his collegiate debut and registered a 23-second pin in an exhibition at heavyweight. The Vikings won the other five exhibition bouts, including four pins.

Central’s Under Armour Invitational (Jan. 6)
SJU recorded five top-two finishes, including three titles, in the silver brackets of Central’s Under Armour Invitational last Saturday in Pella, Iowa.

Sophomore Zachariah Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) led the Johnnies with three pins, including two against SJU teammates, to win the 12-man 197-pound bracket and is now 7-3 on the season.

Junior Cage Linton (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) matched Hunter’s 3-0 record to win the 184-pound title and Krueger posted a 2-0 mark to win the 141-pound bracket. Krueger is now 13-6 on the year.

A pair of freshmen – Kwak and Wayne – both went 3-1 with a pair of pins to place second at heavyweight and 197 pounds, respectively. Kwak improved to 12-8 with a team-best nine pins, while Wayne is now 11-8.

REGIONALLY RANKED WRESTLERS: Two Johnnies – freshman Owen Herbst (sixth at 174; Buffalo, Minn.) and Krueger (seventh at 141 pounds) – were ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Upper Midwest region rankings released today (Jan. 12). Both wrestlers were also listed as honorable mention (Nos. 29-36) by in its latest rankings posted Dec. 23.

WHO WILL BE THERE: The Johnnies and host Vikings are scheduled to be joined by wrestlers from Northland C.T.C. and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
