NDSU Opens Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Fourth North Dakota State wrestlers remain in contention after day one of the Southern Scuffle on Monday, Jan. 1, held at McKenzie Arena. Max Petersen (149), Gaven Sax (174), Aidan Brenot (184) and Lathan Duda (197) all advanced to day two and the round of 12.

Sax and Duda each reached the quarterfinals before suffering their only loss of the day in their final match in the evening. Sax picked up 15-0 and 17-0 tech falls in the morning session over Austin Keal (Little Rock) and Brodie Porter (The Citadel) before falling to #30 Tate Picklo (Oklahoma) in the quarters. Duda had just one win, defeating Chattanooga’s David Harper in his only match of the morning session. Duda then lost to Indiana’s Gabe Sollars 8-3 in his quarterfinal match.

Petersen picked up an 8-1 win over Duke’s Jarred Papcsy in his opening match before falling to Appalachian State’s Jeremiah Price 8-5 on a takedown as time expired. Following his loss, Petersen picked up a 9-8 win over The Citadel’s Jeffrey Boyd before advancing to the round of 12 with a major decision victory over Bucknell’s Riley Bower, 11-3.

Brenot dropped his opening match of the event but answered back with a pair of wins to advance to the second day. Brenot shut out Cal State Bakersfield’s Braden Smelser 5-0 in his first consolation bracket match and then scored a 13-4 major decision over Adam Ortega of The Citadel in his final match of the day.

Landen Johnson (157) and Devon Dawson (285) each picked up a pair of wins on the day, finishing at 2-2 in their first trips to the Southern Scuffle. Johnson had a pin and Dawson scooped up a major decision victory.

Spencer Mooberry (197), Brendan Howes (165), Boeden Greenley (157) and Fernando Barreto (133) all picked up one win on the day. Mooberry and Howes secured a pin in their respective wins, while Barreto scored a major decision. Barreto would pick up an injury in his second match, medically forfeiting out of the event.

Brenot, Duda, Petersen and Sax will look to reach the placing rounds for NDSU on Tuesday. Consolation rounds are set to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
