Sax Leads Bison on Day Two of Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – North Dakota State wrestling finished with three placers at the 2024 Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga at McKenzie Arena. Gaven Sax led the way for the Bison with a third-place finish at 174 pounds, avenging his only loss of the weekend, defeating Oklahoma’s Tate Picklo in the third-place match while also taking the Southern Scuffle Gorrarian Award.

Sax recorded a 4-0 mark on the day, running through the consolation bracket to claim the bronze medal. The junior started the day with a 4-3 decision over Bucknell’s Myles Takats, using a late third-period takedown to claim the victory. Sax then made quick work of his next match, recording his third shutout tech fall of the weekend with a 15-0 victory over Northern Colorado’s Travis Mastrogiovanni. Sax then advanced to the third-place match with a victory by disqualification over #22 Lorenzo Norman of Stanford.

In the third-place match, Sax countered a first-period attack from Picklo and eventually maneuvered into a takedown for the lead. Going into the second period leading 3-1, Sax started on top after Picklo chose bottom and Sax rode a dominant period before working Picklo to his back and securing the slap of the mat from the referee at 4:46.

Sax finished the Southern Scuffle with a 6-1 record, including five bonus-point decisions and outscoring his opposition 57-12. The third-place finish is a new personal best for Sax after taking fourth in 2022 at 149 pounds. It is the ninth top-three finish for a Bison wrestler at the event in four trips.

Aidan Brenot took seventh overall at 184 pounds for the Bison in the true freshman’s first appearance at the Southern Scuffle. Brenot started his day with a dominant win over Northern Colorado’s Branson Britten in the round of 12, scoring a 15-4 major decision with four takedowns. Brenot would fall to Stanford’s Jack Darrah in the next match, placing him in the seventh-place match. Brenot would take seventh after a medical forfeit from Stanford’s Abe Wojcikiewicz.

Max Petersen claimed the other placing finish for the Bison, taking eighth overall at 149 pounds. Petersen reached the medal rounds with a 4-2 win over Davidson’s Tyler McKnight in his opening match of the day. Petersen secured the match’s only takedown in the first period and added an escape to claim the win. Petersen would then fall on a late takedown for the second time in the tournament, losing 8-5 to Gardner-Webb’s Zach Price. In the seventh-place match, Petersen suffered a loss in the first period by pin.

Lathan Duda had the only other match for the Bison on the day, falling in the round of 12 and failing to reach the medal rounds. Duda dropped his match to Noah Pettigrew of Northern Colorado by a 16-5 major decision.

North Dakota State finishes the Southern Scuffle in ninth overall out of 21 teams, scoring 53.5 points. The Bison have finished in the top 10 all four years competing at the event.
