SMSU Announces 2024 Signing Class

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head wrestling coach Chayse Jackson recently announced eight high school student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their academic and wrestling careers at SMSU.

Joining the program for the 2024-25 season include high school seniors Devin Carter from Walnut Grove, Minn., Tate Condezo from Marshall, Minn., Gavin Lambert from Hastings, Minn., Dylan Louwagie from Marshall, Minn., Zach Pittman from Grand Island, Neb., Ethan Sylvester from Minneapolis, Minn., Jacob Taplin from Osakis, Minn., and Noah Torgerson from St. Michael, Minn.

“This year’s class is an excellent group of student-athletes. These individuals not only excel on the mat, but in the classroom and their community,” Jackson said. “We are truly excited to welcome these guys to SMSU and expect many of them to make an impact on our lineup and program immediately. The local connections will be great for our community, while those from farther away bring a much needed outside perspective. Look for this class to go down in SMSU’s history books 4-5 years from now!”

Carter is a senior at Tracy Area High School and is expected to compete at 140 pounds for SMSU. He holds the school takedown record, is a two-time state qualifier, four-time academic all-conference honoree, and finished his junior season with a record of 41-2. A state champion, Carter was ranked No. 1 in the state of Minnesota at 133 pounds as a junior and earned notable victories at the MNUSA Apple Valley Freestyle Open (2022), Benson Classic (2022), and Redwood River Riot (2022).

Condezo is a senior at Marshall High School and will compete at 174 pounds for the Mustangs. He has qualified for the state wrestling tournament three times, including a third-place finish in the 152-pound category as a sophomore and a fifth-place finish in the 160-pound category as a junior. A multiple-time Freestyle/Greco place winner, Condezo finished his junior season with a record of 45-11 and has accumulated over 150 wins in his career. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in his weight class.

Lambert is expected to compete at 125/133 pounds for SMSU and is a senior at Hastings High School. He capped off a 17-3 junior season at 113 pounds, being a member of the 3A state championship team. Lambert is a multiple-time MNUSA Freestyle/Greco state place winner.

Louwagie is a senior at Marshall High School and will compete at 141 pounds for SMSU. A 2022 and 2023 Class 3AA state finalist at 132 pounds, Louwagie claimed victory at the 2023 freestyle state championship and 2023 Greco state championship. He is a four-time state place winner and has amassed over 205 career victories, the most in Marshall High School history. The senior also holds the records for wins in a season, career win percentage, and career pins. A five-time all-conference honoree and four-time all-state honoree, Louwagie earned seven letters for his participation both in wrestling and football and was named a 2023 MWCA Minnesota Academic All-State Wrestler.

Pittman, a senior at Grand Island High School, will compete at 285 pounds for SMSU. He is a three-time letter winner and two-time national team member. A two-time state qualifier and 2022 place winner (5th), Pittman also finished seventh place at the 2021 Council Bluffs Classic meet and has garnered a career record of 80-29.

Sylvester is a senior at Totino-Grace High School and is expected to compete at 149 pounds for SMSU. He is a four-time state qualifier and placed fourth at the 2023 state meet. A two-time Council Bluffs Classic place winner, Sylvester placed second at the MNUSA Freestyle and Greco state meet.

Taplin, a senior at Osakis High School, is expected to compete at 149/157 pounds for the Mustangs. He is a two-time state qualifier and placed fifth at the MNUSA Freestyle State meet and Big Buck Nationals. A four-time letter winner, Taplin has currently amassed 128 wins in his high school career and holds school career takedown records.

Torgerson is a senior at St. Michael-Albertville High School and will vie for a spot at 174/184 pounds for the Mustangs. He was a state place winner as a junior at 170 pounds closing with a 36-6 record. A two-time state qualifier and two-time state place winner, Torgerson placed first at the 2023 MNUSA Freestyle and Greco state meet in the USA Junior 1 class.

SMSU, located in Marshall, is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
