SMSU set to host Parkside and MSUM

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (2-3, 0-3 NSIC) will host a pair of dual meets this weekend inside the PE Gym. On Friday, Mustangs will square off with the 4th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers (4-0, 4-0 NSIC) at 7 p.m., while on Sunday, SMSU will take on the MSU Moorhead Dragons (1-2, 0-2 NSIC) with the dual scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

The Mustangs entered the NWCA Top 25 in the latest rankings, coming in at No. 24 on the team rankings. SMSU also remained at No. 24 in the team tournament rankings in the Open Mat rankings.

Jacob Dykes (285 pounds) is ranked at No. 11 in both the NWCA and Open Mat rankings. So far this season, Dykes has earned victories over Devon Rice (Newberry), who is currently ranked No. 10 in the NWCA rankings and No. 12 in the Open Mat rankings, as well as Jake Swirple, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the NWCA rankings and No. 8 in the Open Mat rankings.

At 197 pounds, Caden Steffen currently ranks No. 4 in the NWCA and No. 3 in the Open Mat rankings. Steffen’s last three matches have seen him pick up a sudden victory over Matt Kaylor (UMary), who currently ranks No. 8 NWCA and No. 9 in the Open Mat rankings, a decision victory over Minot State’s Cannon Potts, who currently ranks No. 19 in the Open Mat rankings and a decision victory over Augustana’s Max Ramberg who is currently ranked No. 6 in the Open Mat rankings.

LAST TIME OUT: The Mustangs lost a home dual to Augustana on Jan. 12 by a score of 24-13. The Mustangs picked up four wins in the dual, by Luke Peterson at 149, Adam Sylvester at 184, Caden Steffen at 197 and Jacob Dykes at 285.

PARKSIDE SERIES HISTORY: SMSU trails the all-time series 0-5 in a series that dates back to 2001. The Rangers won the last meeting 34-9 and are 1-0 in Marshall, winning on Feb. 11 2022, by a score of 21-12.

MSU MOORHEAD NOTES: The Dragons (1-2 overall, 0-0 NSIC) are unranked in the NWCA and Open Mat rankings and currently have no ranked wrestlers. MSUM defeated the University of Jamestown by a score of 38-10 to earn their lone dual victory this season.

MSU MOORHEAD SERIES HISTORY: SMSU trails the all-time series 25-27-1 in a series that dates back to 1983. The Mustangs have won the last five meetings, with MSUM last winning on Feb. 10, 2018. The Mustangs are 10-9 at home against the Dragons.
