FitzPatrick’s pin in penultimate match gives SCSU 17th consecutive win over Northern State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 5 St. Cloud State Wrestling (10-1, 5-0 NSIC) remained perfect in conference duals with a 23-15 win over No. 18 Northern State (7-9, 2-2 NSIC) on Thursday evening at Halenbeck Hall. Northern State pulled within three points of the Huskies following a win in the dual’s eighth match, but redshirt junior 184-pounder Bryce FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn.) stopped any momentum the Wolves had with a first-period pin to seal the victory for SCSU.

The win was the 17th consecutive victory for the Huskies over the Wolves dating back to Jan. 13, 2007.

The dual began at heavyweight with sophomore heavyweight Elijah Novak (Foley, Minn.) recording a 9-2 win over Nathan Schauer before the dual flipped over to the lightweights. At 125 pounds, newly-ranked redshirt sophomore Conor Knopick (Omaha, Neb.) dominated his opponent, Landon Fisher, with three takedowns, two near-falls, and a reversal to earn a 15-2 major decision. Knopick improved to 9-1 on the season with his third major decision victory and fifth bonus point victory of the season.

Redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Alyeus Craig (Wichita, Kan.) earned a 2-1 win over Braydon Mogle that was sandwiched between wins from Northern State at 133 and 149 pounds. Then, junior 157-pounder Nick Novak (New Prague, Minn.) continued his winning ways in the first match following intermission, as he earned a ranked win over No. 4 Devin Bahr, 5-2. Novak scored a takedown in the second period, an escape in the third, and a riding time point for his victory while improving to 14-0 on the season.

After a decision win from graduate 165-pounder Anthony Herrera (Stansbury Park, Utah), Northern State made things close following a win by fall at 174 pounds to make the score 16-13 with two matches to go. The momentum swing didn’t last for long, however, as 34 seconds all the hope the Wolves had to pull an upset was gone thanks to FitzPatrick. The Husky junior quickly took down Sam Kruger in the match’s opening seconds and then scored the pin fall at 0:34 to give the Huskies a nine-point cushion at 22-13.

Redshirt senior 197-pounder Dominic Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) closed out the match for the Huskies, beating Treyton Cacek, 4-1, to finish the match out at 25-13.
