Steffen defeats no. 4 Murphy; Mustangs lose to Huskies

MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 25 ranked Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team fell to the No. 5 ranked St. Cloud State University Huskies by a final score of 44-3 on Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud.

SCSU showed why they are ranked fifth in the NWCA rankings, picking up eight bonus point wins against the Mustangs, including three falls, three tech falls, and two major decisions.

Luke Peterson wrestled a close match with Nolan Throne, falling by a 4-3 decision.

Caden Steffen, ranked 3rd at 197 in the latest NWCA poll, wrestled Dominic Murphy, who was ranked 4th at 197. The match was a close one, with each wrestler earning an escape. However, the difference was Steffen’s takedown in the third period, which earned him a 4-2 decision victory.

“Tough loss, but good fight,” said third-year head coach Chayse Jackson. “They exposed several of our weaknesses and took advantage of a few mistakes and shifts in our lineup. These young guys learned a hard lesson on the importance of little positions. The good news is we don’t have to be the best or most prepared today. But a month from now. So we will return to Marshall and return to work. 1% better every time out on the mat. Up next – Kato. #Letsride”
