Vikings Earn Dominant Victory Over USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In the first matchup in nearly 14 years between cross-town foes, The No. 14 Augustana wrestling team won nine of ten matches en route to a 43-6 thumping over Sioux Falls.

The Vikings are now 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC, while the Cougars drop to 2-9, 0-6.

The first period at 125 pounds saw multiple stalemates and blood times, but Jaxson Rohman was able to put together an impressive second period while riding out the entire two minutes. Rohman was able to capitalize on endurance in the third with an escape and three takedowns on his way to a major decision.

After a loss at 133, the Vikings got back on track at 141 with Hunter Burnett. Burnett was rolling early with a takedown, two nearfall points, and a stall point in the first period. After an escape opened the second period, he tacked on another takedown and then added one more in the third while adding a stall point and riding point to close out the win.

A pair of first-period takedowns got Kyle Boeke started at 149 pounds while collecting over a minute of riding time. Continuing work on top, Boeke was able to secure the riding point after riding out the second period. After a quick escape, Boeke was able to earn a bonus point with two takedowns and a riding point to close the major decision and put the Vikings in front 12-6.

Connor Simmonds earned a pair of first-period takedowns and four nearfall points in the second period to take a commanding lead. The lead was cut into in the third, but one last escape and a riding point helped him to a major decision of his own to grow AU’s lead to 16-6.

At 165, Tyler Wagener set the tone with four first-period takedowns. He went on to add a takedown in the second and third, as well as a third period escape, stall point, and riding point to punctuate another Viking major victory.

If you blinked, you may have missed the final four weight classes of the night. At 174, Coy Gunderson recorded four takedowns on his way to a first-period pin. Cade Mueller followed at 184 with two takedowns and a first-period pin of his own. Max Ramberg was deemed the winner via forfeit at 197, and Max Balow provided the exclamation point with a pin at 41 seconds.
