Cornell, SDSU, Lehigh remain atop Mid-Major Top 20

Cornell, South Dakota State, and Lehigh stayed put atop the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Mid-Major Coaches Poll released on Wednesday.

The Big Red (10-3) beat a pair of Ivy League opponents – Penn and Princeton – over the weekend. South Dakota State split matches on the road against Big 12 foes Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Jackrabbits (12-3) remain second in this week’s Mid-Major poll. Lehigh improved to 6-3 after picking off Bucknell 31-11.

Northern Iowa (6-6) jumped to fourth this week after splitting Big 12 duals. The Panthers beat California Baptist 36-9 on the road before returning to Iowa, where they fell to host Iowa State 27-11. Little Rock improved to 14-5 after home wins against CSU Bakersfield and SIU Edwardsville. The Trojans’ 14 wins are the most in school history and are currently tied with Ohio State for the most dual meet wins in the nation among Division I men’s teams.

Campbell, which is ranked 24th in the nation overall, moves into sixth, while the rest of the Top 10 is Appalachian State, Cal Poly, Navy, and Penn.

The EIWA leads all conferences with seven teams ranked in the Top 20, followed by the Big 12, which has six of its mid-major affiliate members ranked. The Mid-American Conference has three, followed by two of the three Pac-12 affiliates and two SoCon affiliates. Among All-Sports Conferences, the Patriot League has four schools – Lehigh, Navy, Army West Point, and Bucknell – inside the Top 20.

Methodology: The NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Mid-Major Coaches Poll is voted on by one coach from Division I wrestling conferences with mid-major representation. Each first-place vote is worth 20 points, 19 points for a second-place vote, 18 for a third-place vote, and so on through to one point for a 20th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results and represents schools that are in not full members in all-sports conferences considered the “Power 4/5.”
