Mavericks Travel to No. 14 Vikings

Minnesota State travels to No. 14 Augustana in Sioux Falls today, Feb. 10th, to face the Vikings at 2:00 p.m.

The No. 14 Vikings hold a 12-5 overall record and a 6-1 conference record, with their only conference loss being UW-Parkside, ranked No. 7 at the time. Augustana currently has five ranked wrestlers, including No. 2 at 125 pounds, Jaxson Rohmen. Head coach Jason Reitmeier is in his 21st season with the Vikings.

Last Time Out: After the Mavericks’ dominating win over MSU Moorhead, 30-6, MSU continued their win streak with a home victory over Southwest Minnesota State, 30-15. At 285 pounds, redshirt-freshman Tanner Gaffey, of MSU, had an upset win over SMSU’s No. 10 Jacob Dykes, 5-2 decision. The Mavericks also traveled to Upper Iowa to face a non-conference opponent, losing 13-24.

The Makovsky File: In his 31st year with Minnesota State, head coach Jim Makovsky holds an impressive 306-138-3 career record, the most in program history. Makovsky has coached 12 Individual National Champions and 96 NCAA All-Americans and has been inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.

National Appearances: Minnesota State made an appearance on the podium in the 2022-23 season with senior Darrell Mason, at 285 lb., finishing third. Mason held a 17-4 record, became a two-time NCAA All-American, and earned the Minnesota State Senior Male Athlete of the Year Honor. Mason was also the national champion at 285 lb. his junior year with a perfect 22-0 record.
