Minnesota Ride Bonus-Point Victories to Win Over Maryland

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 10 Minnesota (7-2, 2-2 B1G) won eight of 10 matches, including each of the final six, in a 30-6 victory over Maryland (3-6, 1-5) Friday night at Maturi Pavilion.

The Golden Gophers got bonus-point victories from seniors Patrick McKee, Garrett Joles and Isaiah Salazar, as well as sophomore Bennett Tabor, to improve to 7-1 all-time against the Terrapins, including a 5-0 mark since Maryland joined the Big Ten. After shutouts in 2019 and 2021, Minnesota has now outscored Maryland 123-6 in the last three meetings.

McKee, ranked 14th by Intermat, set the tone for the night with a dominant 16-0 tech fall over Tommy Capul in the opening match at 125 pounds. McKee led 7-0 through the first period and never looked back as he recorded his third tech fall win of the season and improved to 2-2 in Big Ten action this season.

No. 20 Tyler Wells was handed his first Big Ten loss of the season in a 2-1 decision to No. 21 Braxton Brown at 133 pounds, while No. 21 Vance VomBaur won by the same score at 141 pounds against No. 17 Kal Miller. It was VomBaur’s first conference win of the season and his third win of the year against a ranked opponent.

Maryland got its final victory of the night at 149 pounds when No. 14 Ethen Miller topped No. 13 Drew Roberts, 7-2. From there, it was all Minnesota.

No. 5 Michael Blockhus improved to 4-0 in the Big Ten and 4-0 against ranked opponents this season as he prevailed in his matchup at 157 pounds with No. 33 Michael North, 5-1. A second-period escape and takedown was enough for Blockhus to win his sixth straight match and give Minnesota an 11-6 lead going into intermission.

Coming out of the break, No. 28 Blaine Brenner scored his most points in a conference match this season with a 10-6 win over Gaven Bell. Brenner needed just 15 seconds to get his first takedown and he added a second-period reversal plus another takedown in the third to secure the win.

Senior Andrew Sparks got back in the winner’s column and ended a two-match skid in a 5-2 decision over Dom Solis at 174 pounds. Sparks was down 1-0 through two periods but secured a third-period takedown and added riding time to win for the first time since the Cougar Clash in early December.

The first of three-straight bonus-point victories started at 184 pounds when Salazar recorded his fourth major decision of the season in a 10-1 win over Chase Mielnik. The damage was done in the first period as the sixth-ranked Salazar racked up a takedown, four nearfall points and nearly three minutes of riding time.

Joles picked up the Gophers’ second tech fall win of the night, and his third of the season, in a 20-4 win over Kevin Makosy at 197 pounds. Ranked 21st, Joles utilized six takedowns, including four in the first period alone, to even his conference record at 2-2 and push his season mark to 14-6.

Tabor provided the exclamation mark with his fourth major decision of the season in a 12-4 win over Jordan Gabriel at heavyweight. The 29th-ranked Tabor was in control through two periods at 5-1, and he added a pair of takedowns in the final frame to notch his first conference victory of the season.

Minnesota closes out its two-match homestand Sunday as it welcomes Northwestern to Maturi Pavilion for a 1 p.m. dual that will be televised on Big Ten Network.
