Minnesota State Hosts SMSU to Start the Weekend

Mavericks Face Southwest Minnesota State and Upper Iowa

Minnesota State is back at home to start the weekend, hosting Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 3rd, at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, MSU travels down to Upper Iowa to face a non-conference opponent.

About Southwest Minnesota State: The Mustangs hold a 1-5 NSIC conference dual record, with a 3-5 overall record. SMSU’s conference dual win is to MSU Moorhead, winning 30-8 in a similar fashion to MSU. Head coach of the Mustangs, Chayse Jackson, has amassed a record of 6-19 overall.

About Upper Iowa: During their first year in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Peacocks are 6-4 in overall duals and 3-0 in the conference. In January, the Peacocks also faced MSU Moorhead, winning 39-6.

Last Time Out: The Mavericks won their first NSIC dual of the season last week against MSU Moorhead, 30-6, only dropping matches at 133 pounds and 149 pounds. Sophomore Kole Marko and junior Drake Hayward both recorded technical falls, helping secure the Maverick win.

The Makovsky File: In his 31st year with Minnesota State, head coach Jim Makovsky holds an impressive 305-137-3 career record, the most in program history. Makovsky has coached 12 Individual National Champions, 96 NCAA All-Americans, and has been inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.

National Appearances: Minnesota State made an appearance on the podium in the 2022-23 season with senior Darrell Mason, at 285 lb., finishing third. Mason held a 17-4 record, became a two-time NCAA All-American, and earned the Minnesota State Senior Male Athlete of the Year Honor. Mason was also the national champion at 285 lb. his junior year with a perfect 22-0 record.
