Mustangs ready to square off with Mavericks

MARSHALL, Minn. – The 25th ranked Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team (3-5, 1-5 NSIC) will travel to Mankato to face off with the Minnesota State University Mavericks (4-3, 1-3 NSIC) on Saturday, with the dual scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs dropped one spot and are now ranked No. 25 in the NWCA rankings released on Jan. 22. SMSU dropped two spots in the latest Open Mat rankings, released on Jan. 31, moving down to No. 25 in the Team Tournament rankings.

Dykes moved up a spot in the latest NWCA rankings, entering the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 10. Dykes moved up a spot in the Open Mat rankings, coming in at No. 12. Dykes has earned victories over Devon Rice (Newberry) who is currently ranked No. 11 in the NWCA rankings and No. 13 in the Open Mat rankings, Jake Swirple, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the NWCA rankings and No. 10 in the Open Mat rankings and Lloyd Reynolds, who is currently ranked No. 14 in the Open Mat rankings.

Caden Steffen (sponsored by Borch’s)
At 197 pounds, Steffen currently ranks No. 3 in the both the NWCA and the Open Mat rankings. Steffen has picked up victories over Dominic Murphy (St. Cloud State), who is ranked No. 4 in the NWCA rankings and No. 9 in the Open Mat rankings, Matt Kaylor (UMary), who is ranked No. 6 by the NWCA and No. 10 by Open Mat, Max Ramberg (Augustana), who is ranked No. 11 by the NWCA and No. 7 by Open Mat and Cannon Potts (Minot State), who is ranked No. 20 by Open Mat.

LAST WEEK: The Mustangs lost a road dual to No. 5 St. Cloud State on Jan. 27 by a score of 44-3. Caden Steffen earned the lone victory for the Mustangs at 197, earning a takedown with 40 seconds left in the third period to secure a 4-2 decision victory over St. Cloud State’s Dominic Murphy.

MINNESOTA STATE NOTES: The Mavericks (4-3 overall, 1-3 NSIC) are unranked in both the NWCA and Open Mat rankings. Minnesota State has no wrestlers ranked by the NWCA, but has two wrestlers ranked in the Open Mat rankings, No. 16 at 141 Trayton Anderson and No. 15 at 165 Kole Marko.

MINNESOTA STATE SERIES HISTORY: SMSU trails the all-time series 10-32 in a series that dates back to 1980. The Mavericks won the last meeting by a score of 26-18. The Mustangs last won the meeting two years ago, on Feb. 13, 2022, by a score of 24-16.
