Mustangs set for Super Regionals

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team (4-7 overall, 2-7 NSIC) is set to travel to Minot, N.D., to take place in the NCAA Super Region V Championships on Saturday, with the meet scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Region V comprises the 10 NSIC wrestling programs, as well as Upper Iowa.

The top three placers at each weight class will earn a spot at the NCAA DII National Championships in Park City, Kan., on March 15-16.

Last season, Shane Corrigan and Jaxson Rohman placed first and second in the Super Regional to earn their spot in Nationals. Rohman lost a 4-2 decision in the first-place match to place second. Corrigan placed seventh.

Projected at 125 for the Mustangs is Carlo Arreola. Arreola is 12-9 overall and 4-7 against Region V opponents this season, winning three of his last four matches heading into the Super Regionals.

Last season, Reece Barnhardt placed second in the Super Regional at 133 to earn a spot in the national championships, where he placed seventh.

Projected at 133 for the Mustangs is Chase Hanson. Hanson is 4-8 overall and 0-6 against Region V opponents this season.

Last season, Cayden Henschel defeated Hunter Burnett in the 1st place match to place first at the Super Regional, Tate Murty rounded out the top three at the Super Regional. In the national championships, Tate Murty placed eighth, knocking both Henschel and Burnett out of the consolation bracket.

Hunter Pfantz is projected at 141 for SMSU. Pfantz is 2-8 so far this season and 0-5 against Region V opponents this season.

Last year, Nick Novak placed first at the Super Regionals, with Devin Bahr and Eric Faught rounding out the top three. Nick Novak went on to place first at 157 at the national championships.

Sean Howk is projected at 157 for the Mustangs. Howk led the Mustangs at last year’s Super Regionals, picking up a pair of victories and placing sixth at 157. Howk is 8-8 overall this season and 5-6 against Region V opponents.
