MWCA Scholarship Recipients 2024

The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has awarded eight $1,000 scholarships this year. High school seniors who have wrestled at a Minnesota high school and are college-bound were eligible to apply.

Congratulations to this year’s MWCA scholarship winners:

Jack Nelson Mound Westonka
Jack Nelson

Jack Nelson of Mound Westonka High School is the son of Dan and Lisa Nelson and is coached by Todd Munsterteiger. Jack is a three-sport letter winner, participating in football and baseball as well as wrestling. Jack is a four-time state entrant in wrestling and is a three-time state champion. Jack is viewed by his teachers as a model student and a true leader in his classes and activities. Jack plans on attending the University of Minnesota, where he will compete on the wrestling mat for the Gophers.

Cy Kruse Totino Grace
Cy Kruse

Cy Kruse wrestles for coach Doug Svihel at Totino Grace High School. His parents are Jay and Mary Kruse. Cy is an outstanding student with a cumulative GPA of over 4.0 while taking the most advanced classes offered by his school and is viewed as a terrific student leader. In addition to wrestling, Cy participates in baseball. Cy had a second-place finish in last year’s state wrestling tournament and has had much success in USA wrestling. He plans on attending and wrestling at Cornell University.

Will Sather Eden Prairie
Will Sather

Will Sather Attends Eden Prairie High School and is coached by Marcus LeVesseur. His parents are Ryan and Ashley Sather. A teacher at Eden Prairie says of Will, “In my 31-year career…. Will Sather is one of the most impressive student-athletes I have ever encountered!” Will has a 4.0 GPA while taking all the advanced courses he could. Will Sather is a three-time participant in the state wrestling tournament, was a state champion in 2022, and runner-up in 2023. He was also a three-year starter in football and earned AP All-State honors last fall. Will is a member of the National Honor Society and is active as a volunteer in his church and community. Will plans to attend Princeton University.

Zak Mcphee Proctor Hermantown
Zak McPhee

Zak McPhee is the son of Megan Loppnow and Eric McPhee and wrestles at Proctor High School, where his father is also his coach. Zak is described as an exceptional leader by his teachers and is an outstanding student with a perfect 4.0 GPA and number one ranking in his class academically. Zak is a three-time state tournament entrant and was runner-up in the state wrestling tournament last year. He is also an outstanding football player and track athlete. Zak is a member of the National Honor Society, participates in Math League, and volunteers in many community charities. He is undecided on his college choice.

Charlie Petit Wayzata
Charles Petit

Charles Petit wrestles at Wayzata High School under the direction of coach Eric Swenson. Charles’ parents are Colin and Maggie Petit. Charles is a wrestling state place winner, placing 3rd last year. He is an outstanding student and has taken many advanced courses. His teachers and coaches speak of Charles’ tireless work ethic, kindness, and leadership skills. Charles is active in his school and community as a volunteer and participant in many activities. He plans on attending Augustana University.

Nolan Ambrose Jackson County Central
Nolan Ambrose

Nolan Ambrose is a Senior at Jackson County Central High School and is the son of Jeremy and Kassandra Ambrose. He is coached by Nate Hanson. Nolan is a three-time Minnesota State wrestling champion and one of the top students in his class. Nolan is active in many school activities. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the student council, the FFA and was captain of the Cross-Country team. Nolan is his school’s Excel Award winner. He plans on continuing his academic and wrestling career at Augustana University.

Jevon Williams Atwater Cosmos Grove City
Jevon Williams

Jevon Williams, the son of David and Nicole Williams, wrestles at ACGC High School under coach Mike Amsden. Jevon is described as one of the best athletes to ever graduate from ACGC High School. He is a three-time state place winner in wrestling and is a four-year letter winner in football, a sport in which he was chosen as an All-District running back. Jevon is also an outstanding track athlete. In addition to being an A student, he is active in his church and community as a volunteer. Jevon is undecided about his college plans.

Logan Swensen Wayzata
Logan Swenson

Logan Swenson from Wayzata High School is the son of Deb and Eric Swenson. He is coached by his father, Eric. Logan’s economics teacher says of him, “In my ten years as an educator and coach at Wayzata, I have had the opportunity to work with a number of Division I athletes. There are not many who have displayed the same level of maturity and positivity as Logan.” Logan has twice placed second in the Minnesota Wrestling Tournament. He is recognized as a student leader at Wayzata High School and carries a 3.8 GPA. He is active as a volunteer in his church and community. Logan plans to continue his wrestling career at South Dakota State University.
