NCAA Wrestling Awards Standings Update

NCAA debuts Most Dominant Wrestler standings in latest update for the 2024 season

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships.

The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons.

For results to be counted for the awards they must come against opponents in the same division (i.e. Division II vs. Division II). Ties in the falls and tech falls categories are broken based on the aggregate time.

This week features the unveiling of standings for the Most Dominant Wrestler award, which features a 16-match minimum to qualify for the standings.

The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of team points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points per match are awarded as follows.

  • Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)
  • Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)
  • Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)
  • Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)

In Division I, North Carolina State 197-pounder Trent Hidlay leads the early standings for Most Dominant Wrestler with an average of 4.89 points per match. He is currently 18-0 on the year. Oklahoma 197-pounder Stephen Buchanan sits second with a 4.83 average.

In Division II, Scott Joll of UNC Pembroke leads the way with a 5.33 average. Ty McGeary of West Liberty sits second at 5.11 while Isaiah Vance of Pittsburgh-Johnstown is right behind at 4.89.

Atop Division III sits Wartburg’s Joe Pins with an average of 5.22 for the 133-pound weight class. Baldwin Wallace’s Michael Petrella comes in second at 5.21 while Wartburg teammate Massoma Endene is third at 5.12.

There’s a new leader in Division I falls as heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson from Air Force took over the top spot with 11 in a time of 13:38. Gabe Sollars from Indiana holds the second spot with 11 falls in 38:10.

With two falls this week, Lander’s Anthony Yacovetti charged back to the top of Division II. The 197-pounder has 11 falls in 23:55 followed by Pittsburgh-Johnstown’s Isaiah Vance with 11 in 28:58.

The top three in Division III all held strong this week with all three wrestlers picking up three falls each. Ithaca’s Jake Jones now has 20 followed by Mitchell Arch from Case Western Reserve and Timothy Glynn from Trinity (Connecticut) with 19 apiece.

Lock Haven’s Wyatt Henson continues to lead Division I in tech falls for the second straight week. He sits at 12 tech falls in 49:45 while Michael Beard from Lehigh has 12 in 51:07.

Max Shore leads Division II tech falls. The 125-pounder from Tiffin has 11 tech falls on the season while Shane Corrigan of Wisconsin-Parkside trails by one.

Alvernia’s 174-pound Gavin Hollingsworth leads Division III tech falls for the third consecutive week.
