SMSU set to face USF for first time in 13 seasons

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team (3-7, 1-7 NSIC) will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the University of Sioux Falls Cougars (2-11, 0-8 NSIC) on Thursday evening, with the dual scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

MUSTANGS IN THE RANKINGS
Jacob Dykes (sponsored by Countryside Golf)
Dykes fell out of the NWCA rankings after being ranked No. 10 in the previous rankings. Dykes moved up a spot in the Open Mat rankings, coming in at No. 15. Dykes has earned victories over Devon Rice (Newberry), who is currently ranked No. 11 in the NWCA rankings and No. 11 in the Open Mat rankings, Jake Swirple, who is currently ranked No. 8 in the NWCA rankings and No. 9 in the Open Mat rankings and Lloyd Reynolds, who is currently ranked No. 13 in the Open Mat rankings.

Caden Steffen (sponsored by Borch’s)
At 197 pounds, Steffen currently ranks No. 3 in both the NWCA and the Open Mat rankings. Steffen has picked up victories over Dominic Murphy (St. Cloud State), who is ranked No. 4 in the NWCA rankings and No. 7 in the Open Mat rankings, Matt Kaylor (UMary), who is ranked No. 7 by the NWCA and No. 9 by Open Mat, Max Ramberg (Augustana), who is ranked No. 7 by the NWCA and No. 8 by Open Mat, Jackson Kinsella (Nebraska-Kearney), who is ranked No. 10 in the NWCA rankings and No. 5 in the Open Mat rankings, and Tereus Henry (Fort Hays State), who is ranked No. 11 in the NWCA rankings and No. 6 in the Open Mat Rankings.

LAST TIME OUT: The Mustangs lost a home dual to Northern State on Feb. 16 by a score of 14-25. SMSU won four of the matches in the dual, with Carlo Arreola winning by 4-1 sudden victory, Sean Howk winning by 4-2 decision, Caden Steffen winning by 19-3 Tech Fall (4:37), and Jacob Dykes by 1-0 decision.

SIOUX FALLS NOTES: The Cougars (2-11 overall, 0-8 NSIC) are unranked in both the NWCA and Open Mat polls. USF has one ranked wrestler in the latest Open Mat rankings, with Beau Klingensmith coming in at No. 14 at 133 pounds.

SIOUX FALLS SERIES HISTORY: SMSU leads the all-time series 4-0 in a series that dates back to 1968. The last matchup between the two teams took place on Dec. 8, 2010, and ended 27-10 in favor of the Mustangs.
